What to do... induction

Well, here is the situation, I live 70 miles away from the hospital, which is a 90 min drive.  And we have to make this drive two to three times a week, which is adding up in gas money (which like everyone else, we don't really have much of) also it's stressing my hubby out really bad.  Due to the fact that if I go into labor we have to drive all that way. And my husband is a really chill laid back guy, I've never seen this anxious over anything. Well he finally had enough with not knowing when the baby is going to come, He told me he was going to ask the doctor this friday at our appointment to induce me. Which I'm still on the fence about because I'm only 38 weeks (friday I will 38 weeks 3 days to be exact).  And I wanted to try and make it to my due date the 30th of this month. But I want to make hubby happy that I agreed to set up and induction date for him. So what are the pros and cons of being induced. Because I really wanted a vaginal birth and I heard with a induction there is a higher risk of a c-section. I'm worried about the whole induction process, so I just wanted some input on what to do. And how induction went for other moms that were has far along as me. Thanks in advance.

Most doctors won't consider induction til 39 weeks. I would NOT be induced unless your body is doing some progress on it's own. Like I was 5cm and fully effaced when induced. I had a great induction.

I personally wouldn't do it if I were you yet, but that is ultimately between you your hubby and the doctor!

You have a significantly greater chance of having to have a csection by being induced.

But it's up to you.

I was induced with #1 and without a medical emergent reason, I would NEVER suggest it.
The contractions are stronger, more hard on you, and the baby, and 40% end in c-sections.

There is actually a bit MORE than a slight risk of csection when you induce.

Contractions come strong and hard with no real break between, can put baby in distress--actually that happens very often because it compromises oxygen to your baby.  If you have hopes of labor without drugs, this cuts your chances by A LOT given the contractions are so hard and fast that most women can't tolerate it.

90 minute drive is not that big of a deal since labor usually lasts WAY longer than that!  Maybe jump in the car when they're 5 minutes apart instead of the standard 3 minutes... I'm a natural birthing mama, so I just still don't see what the big deal is--you have plenty of time to get to the hospital.  I think if you explain to hubby that there is a health risk to baby if you induce, he may change his mind.  He probably figures that doctors do this all the time, so it must be safe, which is a common misconception.  It's not really all THAT safe!  I wouldn't personally ever do it.  If someone's life is in danger, if there is a REAL danger, doctors won't wait to see if induction works, they'd section a mom.  That's why I think inductions are completely unncessary in most cases.  I won't say all because I haven't heard all stories, and there just might be one out there warranting an induction, but I'm skeptical.

at 38 weeks the baby is ready to be born, 2 out of 3 of my kids were induced one at 36 weeks and the other at 37, both for medical reasons. But both were born vaginal. There is a chance that the induction will not take though.

Some babies are not ready to be born and land in the NICU though.
Even with ultrasound dating, due dates can be up to two weeks wrong in either direction.

I was induced with both of my kids, with my first she was a week and a half early I had preeclampsia with her, and with my second he was 3 days late.  They both went smoothly and were perfect.
I think you should talk to your doctor about it, w/ your husband there.  He will tell you if he doesn't think it is a good idea, or if your body is ready.  Every situation is different, and everyone's body is different!!
Goodluck!!

I was induced with my second. it took two full days. but she finally came :) I doubt the dr will do that before ur due date. but i guess it doesn't hurt to ask.... i dont think i would want to be induced for that. what about seeing if you could get a hotel room?? they may give you a discount if you pay for the whole week or whatever.
