Curious as to why so many Mom's have repeat c-sections...can someone educate me??

A friend of mine had an emergency c-section b/c her baby had a bowel movement and seemed in distress. Something similar happened to another friend of mine. So both of them are having second c-sections b/c the Doc told them that was the safest route.

Here is my thing:

There are HUGE risks to having such a surgery why just do it to do it?

If c-sections are so great then why is it that you can't go on to safely birth vaginally with a later pregnancy?

I pray that I never have a c-section. A LOT would have to be wrong for me to agree to one as well since its not something I take lightly and I don't simply rely on my Docs suggestions b/c he has a medical degree! But if I had to have one I certainly wouldn't want to just have another simply b/c I had one.

I guess I am confused why you hear so many moms say well I have to have a c-section b/c I had one with my previous pregnancy?

I have to have a vaginal birth b/c I had one with my other two pregnancies LOL! Seriously though I am not downing those who have had previous c-sections I just want to be educated in why someone would get cut open more then once!!

Sadly it's not always easy to have a VBAC.  We would have qualified for medi-cal but went with AIM (which is costing us $850) just so I could go to a hospital that will do VBACs.  I have to drive 45 miles to the closest doctor that will actually do them.  And it's so much more convenient for doctors to be able to schedule a c-section than to have to come in when you go into labor on your own they often push c-sections.

I am having a repeat c-section because I have talked to my doctor about the risks and benefits for me with a VBAC and a repeat Csection and I have chosen to go with the repeat Csection.  I am not making this decision just because "I had one with my previous pregnancy"  It's a decision I thought long and hard about and talked to my OB about.

Yea that is exactly my frustration with them. My aunt had one with her last simply b/c the Doc got tired of waiting around for the baby to arrive...I mean WHAT IS THAT!!! LOL

Many women are doing it for various reasons, but some of the most common reasons are, Doctors suggest it as the safest route, or are not giving women true information regarding VBAC.
Some Doctors will not do them at all, some hospitals have even banned VBAC.

Problem is, VBAC is safer than repeat cesareans and a new statement from the National Institute of Health came out with a full report on this last week. There are far more risks from a repeat cesarean than a vaginal birth after cesarean.

Other things impact this too, like being able to schedule births. IMO it is not something women should be electing for without extensive and ACCURATE education on both options.

I think that some women opt for it without knowing some of the major risks.

Because I want one.

I had an emergency c-section with my DD, and was happy with the experience. I felt it was calm and almost relaxing. I knew when I found out I was pregnant again that I was going to have another c-section, however, I am most likely going to have my tubes tied since it is dangerous to keep having c-section after c-section (like my midwife said, one or two is perfectly fine, but after that it's not just 'if' something will happen, it's 'when').

And, btw, you can go on to have a successful VBAC.

I had an emergency c-section with #1. I had planned for a VBAC with my 2nd. I had chronic hypertension so I did a 24 hour urine came back with pre-e, my Dr. called & said to go to L&D I'm having the baby. When the on-call Dr. came in we agreed that if I was dialated to at least 3 we would try & induce otherwise we'd do a repeat. I was only 1cm. For me it was medically necessary in my book.

I know lots of woman who chose to have a repeat because they knew when they needed help with other children.

I know that the statistics say that a VBAC is safer than a repeat C-Sec but if I were in the situation I would choose repeat C-sec.  I have not had to have a C-sec luckily.  The only experience I have had with C-sec's is my best friend I was there when she had her first C-sec and was there when she was talked into her VBAC by her doctor.  Her cervix ruptured and she almost died.  I know from reading that is very rare but after witnessing how horrible that was for her I know If I had the choice I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Well in some cases physicians or hospitals have banned vbacs and in rural areas like mine their is no access to a birthing center or to a midwife.  When ICAN interviewed my hospital they said that if a patient who had a c-section came in a refused another c-section they would get a court order and that when it happened before the court ruled in the hospitals favor.  I would say that a great many hospitals and physicians have banned vbacs perhaps that is why so many women say that they have to have another c-section.

there are a few reasons that u have a cesection because u had one the first time. one is that some doctors and hospitals malpractice insurance doest cover vbac complications.(not a very good one for mother who wants a v bac.) another is that for me i dont know what to expect any other way so part of me just wants to go with what i know. sometime its convenience of having a schedule day and time to deliver your baby. also their are occasion where the first csection was and up and down cut, which my doc said he would not do a v bac if that was the case
