they can test baby but I would wait until after baby is born. This is something that they can easily test at birth and start on iron supplements before resorting to a transfusion. My son was born anemic except they didn't catch it until he was 2 weeks old when he suddenly became jaundiced to the point his levels were 19.8!! He was put in the PICU and monitored and started on iron supplements before a transfusion. Luckily the 3 days on iron helped (not a lot they still wanted to transfuse). We opted not to transfuse since it is so much riskier in a baby (fevers, infections, respiratory issues) and he would have had to stay in the hospital another 2 weeks. It took about 18 months to get him to a normal level but he has never suffered from our decision and is a perfectly happy, healthy and bright 21 month old who is VERY verbal!
My son was low on iron but he was a bit older they gave me some drops and it fixed it right up
