My son eats 8oz of formula every 4 hrs. Dr told me try giving him stage 1 baby food once a day. Do I feed him 6 oz of milk and then baby food or food first then milk?

I would do the later.  Give him baby food first and then finish off with formula.

I started my son out on the baby cereal before trying others. And I always gave him a bottle with it.

Has he even started on rice cereal yet? You're supposed to start with a watery (milky) mix very little and work your way up then add a bit of baby food and slowly more and more babyfood in it then you can transition out of the cereal to the babyfood itself. I always started with a veggie cuz once they taste that sweet stuff that's all they want. Oh and give the bottle after they're done eating..

Formula first!! He still needs the benefits of it more than food. Dont cut his bottles down, give him the 8 oz and then an hour or two later try a jar of food, he may not eat all of it at one time, usually they will eat 1/3 to 1/2 in the beginning.
