Neither, if you're educated about and prepared for birth.

Fear = tension = pain

lol for me it was contractions.  Once I got my wonderful epidural I didn't feel much.  When I was pushing I had an episiotomy (go ahead and bash, I don't care what someone that wasn't there thinks) and all I felt was immense pressure and then it was gone when he came out... my husband said he literally fell out after the dr cut me.  I'm due in less then 2 weeks with this little guy, so if the epidural doesn't work, I'll let you know!

Contractions hurt me BAD. I had back labor. But then promptly got my epidural. So I've never experienced pain past contractions.

Its actually normal to not feel pain. Pain is a response we have when fear is present. I didnt feel pain with my 2nd birth till I stepped in the car, and that was only because deep down I didnt want to go to the hospital.

Contractions...HONESTLY..I have had 4 kids and our 5th is Due in November....yes the contractions are PAINFUL................. But like everyone says..it's not as bad as everyone fears....it's all worth it in the end...you wince up, you hurt, you  might cry...but soon after you will have instant releif when the baby comes out :)
