I'll try to make it short. I want to put my dd in a charter school, her dad is a marine (recruiter) and just found out if she attends a charter school the military doesn't accept that as a form of schooling if she ever wants to go into the military.

He wants to keep her options open but we can't afford private school and public schools in our area just suck. The school I am thinking of putting her in does approx 10% better (if not more) on every state test that the students receive.

As a mother I am completly fine (and kinda happier) with the thought of my dd never going to the military at all but I know that is a decision she would make for herself one day. Am I wrong for wanting better schooling for her in hopes that she does something, anything other than the military or should I rule out charter schools completly just Bc it eliminate that 1 option compared to all the others a charter school can offer.

***So for those of u that don't know here's a quick summary... A charter school is like the middle line between public and private schools. They r funded with public money so they r free but they offer different methods of learning and are much smaller so children r said to receive more one on one attention. If a charter school isn't up to par with public schools then it is closed and this one has been around for years.

I'd put her in the school anyway. Chances of her wanting to enter the military in years to come are probably not that likely. Their are so many other options out there for her. As a parent, I'd do what's best for her now.

Congratulations on finding a school with such great test scores! We are also a military family and have found issues with where we want our kids to go to school. Luckily we found a private school that is affordable but the issue starts when we get restationed again which is what you should consider. You're right that the military should be her own choice and mama I understand what you mean when you hope they do something else. But your concern should be with the present and what is best for her now. Can she transfer from a charter school to a public or private school (since that may be the only option depending on where you get restationed)? The future is always changing. And the "best" education is hard to find sometimes. Make the decision that will be best right now and still work for the next few years. Good luck with your choice!

Id never put any of my children in anything other than a public school. Kids there CAN revieve more one on one attention, they just have to ask for it. IMO, charter schools or for kids from spoiled families.

So worse comes to worse can't she graduate from a charter school, and then get a GED if she really wants to join the military, or do military personel need a HSD? I am not up on the requirements for enlistment... ?

If the military doesn't accept it, they have a test- seperate from the ASVAB- that will show that she is intelligent, without going to and "accreditted" or however they put it school. My cousin's husband just went through this, because he went to a private Christian school.

Uh, not true about the spoiled part. We lived in Philadelphia, the public school system there was terrible and could be down right dangerous. My parents couldn't afford private high school so charter schools were a nice alternative.

How old is your child? If they are like in high school then see what they want to do. If younger, I would go ahead and send them to the charter school, they can do so many other things than go to the military. I understand you wanting your child to get the best education possible.

Him and I aren't together and she lives with me so him getting stationed again in 3 years (or whenever they decide) isn't a problem. He became a recruiter to be closer and build a relationship with her. My plan is to switch her to private once I finish nursing and/or she can get a scholarship (which they don't give until 6th grade).

It is a public school though, technically right?    Especially since it's government-funded and must meet their requirements/
