I just learned this in my class today..I have a degree in child development and am going for my phd. Not only does breast feeding reduce the risk of you getting cancer, it also reduces the risk of your child getting cancer.

Other things are it helps you lose the baby weight quicker. You will also notice that your child will rarely have allergies and such if you're breast feeding.

Do it!

Information and support   --the more, the better!
:-)

Pros to BFing?   Ahhh, where to begin?!  lol

101 Reasons to Breastfeed (ProMom)

WANT TO PREPARE FOR BFing WHILE YOU'RE PREGNANT?

Do what you can to stay hydrated, well-fed, rested.

Go for as natural a birth as possible.

Keep baby with you at birth, no bottles or pacifiers.

Plan to have help at home so that you don't need to do anything but Babymoon.

Stay in bed for 2 weeks breastfeeding.

Let others handle life for you.

Stay committed, know that keeping with it can be tricky but worth it!

Start attending La Leche League meetings now and continue after the birth for information and support.

You can read The Womanly Art Of Breastfeeding now, too.

PRO's:
its FREE!
In general BF babies do not have as many issues with reflux and gas issues (bloating)
Your immunities are babies immunities for as long as you breastfeed so baby is pretty safe from most illnesses
BF babies are in general leaner and studies show they are less likely to become obese later
BM smells good!! Formula stiiiiinks
BM doesn't stain your clothes when baby spits up...formula ruins things

CON's:
Only you can feed the baby...unless you want to pump and give a bottle every once in a while
Your boobies WILL be sore...but it does go away
ummm thats about all the cons I can think of...there are more pro's but I didn't want to go on forever

I suggest you join the breast feeding moms group. They are amazing and are part of the reason breast feeding was successful for me and my boys! Good luck :)

Shoosh Mama there are tons of pros! So glad you want to give it a try! Breastfeeding is literally meant for baby AND you. Right off the bat the feedings will stimulate your uterus to contract faster helping your body heal faster and lose the baby weight faster and in a healthy way. And if you're concerned with DH not being a part of feedings, wait a couple weeks and then start pumping that way you can nurse and then he can bottle feed too. Benefits for baby start with exactly what you said it helps babies stay healthier. Your breast milk has antibodies in it that help fight off germs (helpful when you have school age children living with you too), but also bbies who are breastfed have a lower chance of SIDS, leukemia, diabetes, common colds, ear infections, obesity and more. And because it is specifically meant for babies tummy's, it is easier digested which helps with gas, tummy troubles, and bowel movements (plus BF baies have mouch less stinky poops because of how easily digested the milk is).The bonding you experience will also help lower your chances of postpardum depression. PLUS it's signifigantly more affordable on your family! There are so many benefits and if you have any questions feel free to ask! There is also a breastfeeding group on CM that you may find helpful =)

I have a LOT of info! I am a HUGE advocate of breastfeeding. My best advice is to join the breast feeding group, here on CM ask your questions, ASAP, before baby is born. My second piece of advice is to start going to La Leche meets, even before baby is born! They will give you so much support and information to help you be successful, even before you start! Here is the La Leche site, so you can find a meeting near you. Congrats on your decision. It is not always easy, but I PROMISE it is worth it! : )
