In 2009, I had back surgery for my Scoleosis. I now have herrington rods (two 12" metal rods on either side of my spine, and screws in between all up my spine)  I am 18 weeks and am not as worried for the back pain when I grow more, but LABOR. Has ANYONE had this experience? Please help! ..so scared!

Not myself...

Does this hinder your movement/affect your pelvis?

Usually, if you have rods in your back, you are not going to be able to get an epidural. I would speak to your midwife or obstetrician, but I would also urge you to look into coping methods.

As Doulala asked, how does it affect your movement?

Ok, if you are concerned, what I did was I got the information faxed to me from my back surgeons office describing the procedure and exact verebraes impacted (in order to see if I could have an epidural, etc).

I never dilated but I was induced. It probably didn't have much to do with anything (the dr said it didn't because my surgery was up high). Anyway, I wound up in a c-section due to a "failed induction" but I had other pregnancy complications that led to me being induced (high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia). As long as you go into labor on your own, I think it should be okay--i don't think my son was "ready", if that makes sense. I had an epidural and it worked fine. They were afraid they wouldn't find it but they did very easily. Good luck!

I was able to have an epidural and I have 2 herrington rods in my back from scoleosis surgery in 1997 and I was able to have an epidural. It depends on what vertebraes are affected. Getting this information from the back doctor (surgeon) and getting it to the obgyn will help to determine whether or not you could probably have one. It doesn't mean that the anesteciologist (don't know how to spell that) will be able to find the correct placement due to the amount of curvature still in the spine (mine had to poke around a bit to determine the correct spot but it didn't hurt). I had a c-section though and if they had been unable to do it then they wouldve had to put me to sleep during the procedure.
