The Business of Being Born

DH & I recently watched the documentary The Business of Being Born.  I found it very interesting and it made me even more confident of my desicion to go with a midwife.  Have you seen the documentary?  What did you think of it?  Did you find it a little one sided?

Yes I saw it and do feel it is a little one-sided--  but it didn't say anything I didn't already know having been around the subject and studying it for a while.
In the country where I live (the U.S.), women pay more for poorer outcomes.       I think that is awful!

I have seen it! I saw it after I read Henci Goer's "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" and it really sealed the deal in my mind that having a low-risk birth in a hospital is, generally, not as safe as an out of hospital birth with a trained attendant. I did not find it one-sided. It acknowledges the need for hospitals, for inductions, for c-sections. Her friend, Abby, ended up with a c-section for (if I remember correctly) a failing placenta. Things go wrong and this movie admits that- but, it makes the valid point that something is not wrong with 33% of pregnancies for them to end in major surgery, like they do in this country. We have the second highest mortality rate of all first world countries- we are obviously doing something VERY wrong!

I haven't seen it but we are having a homebirth with a midwife. My last was with a midwife at a birth center. I had docs with my first 2 and would never go back. The care you get with a midwife is so much better, imo. I loved being impowered to make my own choices for pregnancy, labor and delivery and have those choices respected. It makes natural birth so much easier it's not even comparable. I also love that a midwife cares for the whole person and takes more time during appointments. I never feel like I'm just a paycheck to them and always feel as though a midwife puts the health of myself and baby first, rather than profits.

is this something one would want to watch if I have PTSD and am TERRIFIED of the delivery??

YES! It almost makes birth look boring. Most of the births are water births if I remember correctly.
