Kinda worried... Gestational Diabetes Q

I took the 1 hr gestational diabetes test yesterday and they called today to tell methat it was abnormal. I have to go in tomorrow to take the 3 hr test. Has anyone had this happen to them? Does this mean something is wrong with baby? Does this mean something is GOING to be wrong with him? Sorry, I am just a little worried. They said that they want the levels to be under 140 and mine were at 160.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE, ease my mind.

1 mom liked this

Did anything upset you at or before the screening? Traffic issues, husband issues, needle issues, all cause adrenaline and mess up the numbers. Any fight or flight thing could mess it all up. Did you worry about the screening?

I personally skipped the test and they did a n AC1 hemoglobin test instead and finger pricks in office to confirm that I still have good sugars. The idea of drinking that stuff is enough to give me the heebie jeebies. So I know I would have failed the screening. But the meter says I am fine.

Unfortunately the "science" behind GD is really fuzzy.

I had that happen with both of my pregnancies. The 3hr with my first was normal. With my second I had gestational diabetes. It was easily managed with diet. I had to check my blood sugar 4 times a day.

Really? That takes a little stress off of me! So, IF I do have gestational diabetes it can be controlled by my diet and the baby will be ok? I just dont want anything to be wrong with him.

Don't worry. Many people fail the 1 hr and pass the 3hr.  I did and the girl who took my blood said really the 1hr test is not that accurate.  Besides 160 isn't that high.

Your baby will be perfect. :-) When I found out I had it, my OB set me up with the nutritionist at the hospital. She told me what kinds of foods I could eat and showed me how to check my sugar, where they wanted my #'s to be. It's a lot of work but work that is well worth it in the end.

I had my 1 hour come back high and one test come back high on my 3 hour (though they didn't catch it until they sent me to an endocrinologist). Technically I don't have GD (have to have at least 2 tests high on the 3 hour), but they are still have me test 4 times a day and manage my carb intake. Everything will be fine.

Yeah, you can fail the first and then pass the second.  That happened with one of my pregnancies, but with my 3rd I failed both and ended up with gestational diabetes.  I really had to watch what I ate.  I never got put on pills or insulin thank goodness.  Just really had to watch what I ate, and that stunk!!  I remember them saying if I didn't watch what I ate then the baby would come out bigger than normal and that I could pass the diabetes on to the baby!  So that was a big motivation to watch my eating.

Good luck on the 3 hour I hope you don't have it.  :)

This is the first time I failed the 1 hour so I'll probably do the 3 hour at my next appt. I was 4 points over. At least my daughters will be in school and I'll get to catch up on some reading.
