Breastfeeding and vitamin D.

I will be trying to breast feed this baby but I read in a few places breast milk lacks vitamin D. Is it necessary to supplement the baby? What is the best brand and for how long do I do this?

It isn't necessary unless you live somewhere that gets very little sunshine. Even then, you wouldn't need to start until after 6 months. And you could take high doses of D so it will benefit you and pass to baby.

Otherwise, just spend at least fifteen minutes a day in direct sunlight, no barriers.

I don't supplement.  Just sit with baby in a sunny window a bit every day, outside if possible will get you the best results.

The pediatrician can prescribe vitamin D drops. That's what we did with our breastfed baby until she started drinking cows milk.

Vitamin D is only in small amounts in breast milk. That's why you should supplement.

The best form to get, regardless, is via the sun. Which is why supplementation is only necessary in places that get minimal sun for long periods of time throughout the year.

I've never heard that before. I don't think supplementation is necessary. I live in Seattle, Washington. So if you're not familiar with it, we are one of the rainiest cities here on the west coast, so sunlight is usually scarce, (though this summer has been beautiful.) My doctor in my first run of blood tests showed I was really low on vitamin D, so I've been taking 2000 units a day on top of my prenatal. It's only 1 little capsule so it's not difficult to remember or anything. Instead of supplementing baby, I'd supplement yourself! Whatever nutrients you have in your body, baby's gonig to get through your breastmilk. So if you start taking Vitamin D, and keep that regimen up, it'll raise your levels and baby will get it too. Maybe ask your doctor to check it out and see if your levels are low. If they are, start taking some. If not, then you're probably just fine the way you are.

Well my baby will be born in November if I make it that far. I don't think he'd like to sit in the sun in the winter months lol.

But I will ask my general family dr which whom my baby will probably go to and be seen by, about them when that time comes.

We don't, just make sure baby gets access to sunlight.

I also just thought about taking the supplement for myself but I had to ask because I have no clue on this subject.
