Car Seat Safety Challenge Day 2: Know the Expiration Date

Car seats expire and it's important to know the date. Today's challenge is to check your child's car seat expiration date. The expiration date is calculated from the time the car seat is manufactured, not when you buy it.

Here are some reasons why you should stop using an expired car seat:

  • Materials wear down over time.
  • Car seats are only tested for a certain period of time.
  • Technology is constantly improving.
  • Safety standards change.

You can often find a car seat's expiration date stamped to the base of the seat. Car seats usually expire about 6 years after they were manufactured.

Did you know that car seats expire? Have you checked your child's car seat expiration date?

I don't know the exact years but I know both at least have 6 years left as both have 9 year lives and weren't purchased more then 2 years ago and the expiration dates were checked at the time.

I know that my infant carrier expires in 2015, which works great for us because we won't be using it past the end of 2013.  I am not sure when our other 2 seats expire.  I did check them all when we bought them, but the dates didn't stick in my head.  I will have to check the seat in my car today, but It should have at least another couples years on it.

We plan on getting new seats before this baby arrives and they are supposed to be good for up to 10 years.
