Has anyone had a nuchal fold measurement of 3.8 at 12 weeks? What was the result?

Our first ultra sound went great and my husband and I were very excited to see how our baby has grown at our 12 week ultrasound appointment. Our excitement was quickly turned to fear when our Dr. informed us that our baby’s nuchal fold was measuring thick at 3.8mm. Our baby’s nasal bone was present and he or she was opening and closing their hands. They say this is a good sign because Down syndrome usually presents with the absence of a nasal bone and closed hands. Even if our baby has Down syndrome we will love him or her all the same. I am just worried our baby could have a fatal defect.  We are young I am 23 and he is 26 so we are in the lowest risk age group. I never thought I would need to worry about any abnormalities. We are beyond worried sick and we have to wait 2 weeks for our blood results and our appointment at the high risk pregnancy center. Any words of advice?

I know you must be frantic with worry. Hang in there and do your research before you see your Specialist in two weeks. Have a list of questions ready. Education, proactivity and vigilance is needed. Don't ever hesitate to call your doctor, midwife or health care team with any questions or concerns you may have or comments you don't understand. They are there to educate and inform you ~ that's their job!!! And always ~ and trust your gut...xo

age does have some play but don't base it on that I know a lot of 20s moms who have kids with DS.
