Fluid in Kidney at 20 Week Ultrasound

We had our 20 week ultrasound done in December and we have to go back in 4 weeks for a follow-up because fluid was showing in one of the kidneys and they want to check that it isn't an issue. She said not to worry about it that it was nothing major, but now my Dr. said it could be Pyelectasis, but that he has only seen 1 case of this in 5 years.  He also said that it is a weak marker for Down Syndrome.  Has anyone else had this come up during their ultrasound? He has me worried now that our baby may have DS.

It's fairly common. That's all I really know.

Did you do the ds screen at 13ish weeks? They have to tell you worst case scenario when 9/10 it ends up being nothing at all. GL :)

1 mom liked this

No sense in worrying.  They just like to cover all their bases and make sure nothing is wrong.  They had me worried about my sons heart, but he was born perfect.  People with down syndrome are some of the happiest people I know.  Alwayyyys smiling.  Sorry I don't have anymore info. for you.  I would look it up on the Internet, but it always seems to make me worry more.  GL and update us with what happens.

My oldest daughter had a positive quad screen for DS, then when i went to 3 D ultrasound she had fluid in both kidneys. They eventually went down go normal size and was born perfectly healthy.

Did they say in the kidneys or around? My boy had fluid around his kidneys and theh did a million ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy. I am 39 weeks today and they say he looks fine and fluid is good and it is very common especially in boys. I would just keep getting updates from ur dr. Dont stress unless ypu have too, stressing is not good for you or baby so try to stay calm. Believe me i knpw its easier said them done but you can try right lol. GL

My son was found to have that too and we had three level two ultrasounds. This is the most common things in babies, especially boys. His left kidney is at a normal size as of right now and his left did reach to a size that once he is born he will need an ultrasound just to check up on it. This actually tends to correct itself in its own and if not its a small outpatient procedure done at the age of 1. I too was told it raises the chances of DS but again they don't know much about what causes DS they just know some babies had this who had DS but he is correct its a SOFT marker and as long as everything else is measuring good I would not worry about it unless you would think about aborting the baby if he had DS. Having just one marker doesn't raise flags either, you should really look this up and speak to the doctor at your follow up ultrasound. The specialists at my ultrasounds were so nice and explained it all. Lol I turned 30 in oct and just cause I went from29 to 30 that was another alarm for DS. They are doing their jobs and stating the facts. I am due to deliver here any day and honestly I love my son so much and if he does have DS I don't care, he is my son. So pls don't worry! PM if you would like.

i had mine about a month before you did at 20 weeks, i also had a bright spot in the heart. I did the maturnit21 test which is a genetic blood test where they issolate the babys blood in your blood and do the genetic testing on it. its 99% accurate where amnio would be 100%. Test came out negative. I went back at 28 weeks(christmas eve) the baby still has fluid in one kidney. They are having me go back at the end of jan to see if it corrects itself(which is a good possibility) they told me if it doesnt, they will check again one if not 2 more times before birth then if it still didnt correct itself he will have an ultrasound when hes born then probually send to a pediactric urologest for observation or correction if needed. They put it to me in simple terms saying that the urine is back flowing back to the kidneys. my ob said its not common for it to still be there at birth and the peditrition said they will probually send me to the urologest just in case. I know a little girl who had it, they didnt catch it in ultrasound but caught it later when she kept having UTIs. Good luck mama...most likely its not DS or they would have seen other things like extra skin behind the neck, not opening and shuting hands, eyes too far appart, bright spot in the heart and many many other things along with the kidney build up

also i go to level 2 ultrasounds from the best place from missisippi east...they even buy new mashines every 6 months to keep up with the technology
