after an episiotomy or tear? i'm only asking because i heard from a lady who said that she had a second degree tear and the doctors didn't stitch her up but rather let it heal on its own. is that normal or do they usually stitch you up?

Yes normally they stitch you up if you need stitches.

With my daughter I didn't have an episiotomy or a tear. With my son, I had a small tear on the side that would have been one or two stitches. I noticed him reaching for a needle and I ask him if it was bad. When he told me it wasn't, I asked him if he could just leave it and let it heal on its own. They will usually sew it back up, but I would rather let small tears heal by itself.

Depends on what you want.     I haven't done mine and I would not.      But I won't be tearing/cut, I am an intact perineum kinda gal forever more!!    lol

They normally stitch you up. It depends on where the tear is and what degree. The better question (I think, anyway) is HOW to mitigate the risk of tearing or of having an episiotomy! : ) HERE is a link with info on that! : )

I didn't tear, I had what they said was the equivilant of a scratch. The first time they singed it. The second time they allowed it to heal on its own!
