I wet nurse is someone who nurses (breastfeeds) your baby for you.

How are they able to? Did they just have kids an never stopped breastfeeding and are still able to produce milk?

Yes, I think either or. Woman with other kids, or woman with older kids but have kept lactating by being a wet nurse.

They are not common these days.  They used to be popular with the upperclass women over a century ago who didn't want to *ruin* their breasts to nurse (though breastfeeding doesn't ruin your breasts).

I think these ladies covered it.

Actually, it still happens tho not as common. There are also donations of milk to milk banks for moms who can't nurse for some reason or babies who've lost there mother or temporary fixes while mom can't nurse for some reason.

My MIL was actually a wet nurse in the 70's for a little girl who was born addicted to drugs (unsure what type of drugs).
The little girl ended up passing away in infancy, tragic!
I've always thought at least she knew the comfort, warmth, and love of someone's breast.
I nurse all my kids, but could not imagine being a wet nurse... Reason being, it is such a bonding experience. I couldn't imagine getting so close to someone else's child.

My sister and i have wet nursed 2 of each others children. We wet nursed each others 6 year olds and our most recent babies. It was, and is, more of a 'just til mommy can get her hands empty' situation tho and not a full time thing.
