My first appointment was at 11 weeks 3 days and they didn't even try. At 14 weeks, baby's heartbeat was strong! 12 weeks is supposed to be the time when the doppler should pick up the heartbeat, but different things can affect that, i.e. position, weight of the mother, etc. I wouldn't try till 12 weeks, it could be panic-inducing if you don't hear a heartbeat.

My MIL is a midwife, and says it is easier to hear the heartbeat on thinner women. I'm pretty small, and she was pretty confident that they'd be able to hear the heartbeat at my first 10 week appt. My midwife couldn't. About a week later I went in for some minor bleeding, and they checked, and could hear it loud and clear.
