Questions about Prenatal Tests

Hi Everyone! I am new to this site and have a lot of questions about pregnancy. I am now 17 weeks pregnant with my first child. My main concern so far has been the health of my baby. What kind of tests should i be prepared for? So far all my doctor has done is take blood. Do you ever really know if you are having a healthy baby? I go for my second ultrasound the 27th of March. Can they tell by ultrasound if my baby is healthy? Why do i worry about this so much...is this normal?

your normal!! lol I love the book my pregnancy week by week. it broke down everything by the week , the  baby's growth, nutrition, and tests!! most "usual" tests are blood tests and urine and then theres the sugar test. YUM -o-

Most the tests are blood, urine and then the glucose test.  The also asked me if I wanted to have the triple test done, it checks for certain diseases and things like that.  I opted not to because they aren't 100% accurate.  They told my SIL that her daughter would be mentally retarded so they went to classes and did research to prepare and she is PERFECT.  Other than that thats all I know about!

Typically nowadays ultrasounds can tell you alot, make sure that they look at the spine, heart, brain, upper and lower GI, 10 fingers, 10 toes and look at baby's top lip, those are the things that could be wrong, but ultrasound will be able to tell you. I wouldnt take the triple test, just because its gives false postitives and false negatives. If you are too paranoid make your doc schedule you with a maternal fetal specialist and have a level 2 ultrasound done, that is where they look at EVERYTHING, I had them with both of my babies and it was VERY reassuring, very costly but still very reassuring, and they can also tell you with pinpoint accuracy what your baby is (if theyre legs arent closed) hope this helps

at around 24 wks. they should do a downs test, to test for downs syndrome.. and take more blood for other reasons, i had a baby in nov and as far as i remember, after that they dont do anything else until ur last u/s about 36-37 weeks, to check for last minute problems, (low on amnio fluids etc...)
