Hi Everyone,
Hello! I'm Melisa and I will be writing regularly about pregnancy on CafeMom. I hope you'll take a look at my blog:
http://www.cafemom.com/dailybuzz/pregnancy
I'm working on a story about morning sickness and would love to hear your thoughts:
What worked for you in dealing with morning sickness?
What did you find was the most effective?
What's your best tip for other moms-to-be?
If you post in this thread, please keep in mind that I may use your post and your screen name in my blog.
Thank you in advance!

Find the 'one food' that works for you. It will be different each pregnancy. I lost ten pounds early on to morning sickness, and NOTHING worked other than going to bed, or... well that was about it. The only thing I could eat was noodles. Which worked. I could keep them down. So I ate noodles. Cooked regular food for the rest of the family which nearly killed me from the smell, but I would make my noodles and go eat in the other room so I would be away from the smell of meat and I was able to eat.
The other thing I came to notice with moderate to bad morning sickness was that if you throw up once, the day is a loss. You will most likely throw up for the rest of the day. If you can lay still, breathe through it and NOT actually throw up there is a better chance that it will pass and you'll get a few usable hours out of the day. Once you break the seals you might as well call around and cancel the day.
Eating small meals throughout the day instead of three big ones
Have some crackers or a snack by your bed, so when you get up you can put something in your tunmmy right away
Sliced apples
Slicing lemons (the smell helps some)
Motion sickness bracelets
Ginger- anything with ginger root in it, even ginger ale
Peppermint (even try some peppermint tea)
Vitamin B6
Don't have fluids and meals together
Make sure you are drinking lots of water, you need to stay hydrated or it will make it worse
Eat things high in protein and complex carbs
Don't rush around in the mornings- that can make it worse
Stay away from stress as much as possible
Slurpees, or icees... When it gets really bad they help... and they are not hard on you coming back up.
Think about the flavor of your toothpaste and switch if it is contributing to making you nauseous
Get plenty of sleep
Avoid sugar and fatty foods
Ask your doctor about switching to a prenatal vitamin with a lower amount of iron for your 1st trimester
Chewing gum, helps keep your mouth busy and the sensation of needing to throw up to pass
My personal favorite tip was Slurpee's... those I always seemed to be able to get down, and it wasn't "torture" when they came back up (a little gross, I know!).

Eat bland foods- English muffins, fruit, crackers, popsicles all worked for me. Drink as much water as you can. The motion sickness arm bands actually helped me a whole lot. Don't overeat and don't let yourself get hungry either. I agree with the above post about the toothpaste- I threw up at night many times just because my toothpaste was too sweet and sweet flavors triggered my nausea.
Ultrasound @ 13 weeks 4 days, It's a boy!
I had to either suck or smell lemon wedges. I had terrible morning sickness and ended up losing 17 lbs. Now I'm 5 months pregnant and I still occasionally get morning sickness. Crackers helped a little the first 6 weeks and stopped working all together. Now I just do alot of breathing and fresh air.
