well I'm a little confused by your post.  Honestly I couldn't quite understand what you're saying.  I believe that your cervix does get softer & shorter when it starts to dilate.  Did they tell you if you were dilated?  Did the doctor put you on bedrest or tell you that you could be dilating soon?   You didn't say how far along you are so I'm not sure if you should panic or not.

With your cervix soft and no dialation it could take a while to go into labor.  It all depends on baby and your body - woman can be dialted for weeks or not dialted at all then go into labor that night.  Really no way of knowing... sorry.

I'm not really sure what you are asking either.  Hopefully if you are going into labor, you are far enough along?...........

I agree.  Even if you are dialated and effacing it can take weeks before you deliver.

Your cervix will open (dialate: number between 1-10) and soften/thin (efface: % up to 100) in order for the baby to come out.  If your cervix does not open then the baby can not come out and if your cervix is not soft it will be difficult  for it to open up enough to let the baby out easily.

Sounds like you need to attend a labor and delivery class to be better prepared.

Take a deep breath, take it easy. Stress is not good for the baby, or your blood pressure. What will happen will happen, and if something does, then your baby will be in good hands with you doctor. Don't worry.......

Well I wouldn't worry about it.  I mean you're 31 weeks & if you've kept up with this board you know there are women on here who are effaced & dilated for weeks and still don't deliver by their due date.  And there's nothing you can do about it at this point if that's what your body is doing.  Ask your doctor if he's concerned you'll deliver early & if so ask about getting the steroid shots for the lungs to mature.  But it doesn't sound like they told you you're dilated so it's probably your body getting ready for the baby to come.
