My daughter is completely constipated. She is breastfed and supplimented with Similac. I ate broccili and I'm sure thats what did it to her, but that was well over 36 hours ago and she still has not had a bowel movement and she's been crying and gassy all night. I called the pedi and they told me the tablespoon of Karo to 2 oz of water, and the mycolin drops (spelled wrong). I did both of those. She's had 2 servings of the Karo and water and I don't want to keep giving that to her. I am completely worried, probably because I'm a new mom, but i feel so terrible knowing I did it to her. Any advice?
i told my son's pedi how i heard about clear karo syrup in water and she said to do dark karo syrup in milk.. but i dont see the big difference... but u know when my son was a week and two weeks old and was constipated my mom showed me how to take a thermometer (stick the tip in petroleum jelly) and just stimulate his butthole... stick just the tip in and move it around for a little bit and it worked EVERY time... just have to be careful with it.. and idk if she would be able to have prune juice that early... maybe if you dilute it real real good but youd have to ask your pedi..... i hope she gets to feel better mama!
i know how that goes.. my daughter went to the ped. at 10 days for not pooping for 3 days... i was told to take a child sized sapository and kinda rub it to help her go...
i know it was switching from pre-made formula to the dry stuff
i work in a daycare and i've had a baby (over 6 months old) that had to have milk of mag. to get her to go..
best of luck!!!
My youngest was the only one I had the constipation problem with so early. She eventually regulated out, but was down to going about once a week to ten days there at the very beginning. My doctor said not to do the thermometer thing with the jelly, because it can become somewhat of a crutch that you may have to do to stimulate her to go. He suggested 4 ozs of juice twice a day until she went and boy did she go. :)

When my son was an infant, I called the ped office about constipation and was told 1 tablespoon of DARK karyo syrup in 4oz of formula. It could be that there is something else in your diet that she is sensitive too. I know that dairy can be very constipating for some children. Some breastfed babies are more sensitive to what is in mom's diet than others. If you get her to have a bowel movment and she gets constipated again then it's probably something else in your diet. Did you ask the pedi how long she can go inbetween bowel movments without you having to really worry about it? Hope she feels better soon.

ive never heard that, i even spoke with my pedi about it at his check up a week old because he was so constipated and he laughed and said "oh yes the old thermometer in the rear.. bet he doesnt like that!" and that was it... i know of a bunch of people who have done it.. it probably is just different with different people
my son was constipated at a week old. We tried kyro syrup which didnt work for us... so my doctor told us to help him poop but taking a Q tip with a little KY to help him out with it. We also used glycerine suppositories.. and when nothing worked we were told to give him a little bit of mineral Oil. The mineral oil helped soooooo much, we did it for a week and didnt have a problem since.

me again...
Is it at all possible that she isn't getting enough to eat? I did a google search on breastfed babies and constipation and found 2 different sites that said infrequent bowel movments at that age can potentially be a sign that the infant isn't getting enough to eat They also explain what actually classifies as constipation in an infant.. here are the links:

And this one lists some ways you can tell if she is getting enough breastmilk: http://pediatrics.about.com/od/breastfeeding/a/milk_supply.htm
Have you tried taking her temp rectally to get things going?? The doctor did that for my daughter and holy moly...it worked. Just a suggestion!
