How many ultrasounds? (kind of a rant)

The last time I had an ultrasound, I was 20 weeks. I found out I was having a girl. My doctor preceded to tell me it was the last ultrasound I would have. Don't most people have another ultrasound nearer to the end of their pregnancies?

This is so stupid because I had my first son at 24 weeks and have had a miscarriage and have a blood clotting disorder and get a shot of progesterone every week and have had a cerclage put in.So I'm considered super high risk. Why wouldn't he do another ultrasound? Besides, what if he was wrong about the sex of the baby? I'd want to know before we had her or him....

i guess it depends on your OB. with my daughter i didn't have any more after the 20 week US, but with my son i had one at 20 weeks and at 37 weeks. they found out that i had "low" fluid, and when they asked me if i had low fluid with my first child, i said there was no way of finding out, they didn't do near-term US (different OBs). my ultrasonographer was shocked. so who knows.

if there is a concern with your measurements or fetal movement they will do another US i'm sure, but really fetal movements and belly measuring will tell them what they need to know.

As long as there is no medical indication there is no real need for a late ultrasound.

You should definatly bring this up to your OB and just tell him that you'd like to do another ultrasound towards the end of your pregnancy. My OB does 3 ultrasounds (more if needed) One in the very beginning to check for multiple fetus' and what not. Then I got one done at 20 weeks. And I'm getting my last one done at around 34 weeks.

With my first child I had my first sonogram when I was 20 weeks and then again when I was around 36 or 37 weeks.

With this doctor and my second pregnancy I heard that I get a sonogram at 8 weeks and then again at 20 weeks, no more unless there are problems.

Nope, I have never had more than one. Unless there is a medical need for it.

YEah, that's what my dr said, that if there were any problems he would do another... I'd rather not let it get to that though..

Another thing, with my son, I had an U.S everytime I went to the OB. It was awesome.

I'm considered high risk and I am scheduled to have my 7th ultrasound at 32 weeks this Weds. I'm suprised they aren't monitoring you better.

That's what I've been saying! I mean I DO have to go to the dr's every week and have since I was 10 weeks.

Agreeing with the PPs. Most people will have one "routinre" ultrasound at 20 weeks, and unless there is reason for concern based on that one, it will be the last. They're expensive and most doctors see no reason to order multpile ones without good reason. He could be wrong about the sex of the baby if he did 10 ultrasounds, but that's just always a possibility, and since it obviosly doesn't compromise the health of the baby, it doesn't constitute a medical neccessity for one (if it did, you'd have paranoid parents who WOULD want 10 ultrasounds just to be sure they got it right.....). So unless something looked abnormal on your 20 week one, that'll probably be it.
