I'm 26 weeks today and I just noticed my ankles look a little swollen.  I know that I haven't been drinking enough water lately, so I'm making sure to drink lots of it today.  Is it normal to have swelling during pregnancy?  Is there anything I can do to get rid of it?

Thanks!

  • A little bit is normal...a lot is not! I had a lot of swelling in ankles/knees/face and I ended up w/ preeclampsia and had to be induced. Can you check your blood pressure and see if it's high? Try keeping your feet up above your heart when you sit...... keep an eye on it too bc they said I was ok when I was not and a week later they were inducing me and I had BP's of 174/115 and such

  • It's normal, but if it gets very uncomfortable, or if the swelling is sudden, then you need to see a doctor.  This can be a sign of pre-eclampsia/toxemia.  Some women can't wear their wedding rings because of swelling during pregnancy.  Put your feet up for a while, and if you work somewhere that you have to sit at a desk, try putting a box under your feet and make sure that you take quick breaks - even just to walk to the copy machine - to stretch your legs from time to time.

  • Yea definentely watch your nose and face. I always get swollen right away but toward the end my nose tripled in size and i had pre e too. Thats some pretty bad swelling so you should know if that happens. Induction is no picnic either

  • I can check to see if it's high.  I don't really think it is, but you never know.  My blood pressure was just checked 2 weeks ago and I think it was 102/60 or something like that.  I have really low blood pressure.  I do think it has to do with eating food high in sodium lately and not drinking enough water, but I'll check my blood pressure just to be sure.  I also did call my doctor about it to see what they say too.

  • Now that I think about all the food I've been eating I'm wondering if that is what it is......soups, sausage, ramon noodle soup.

I just got off the phone with the nurse and she said to elevate my feet, lay on my left side, and rest as much as I can.

  • Could be the food. High sodium foods can make even a non preggo woman swell up. Just keep an eye on the swelling. If it goes up alot suddenly then see your dr. Im 27 wks now and starting to struggle with pre e again. Always starts around 25 or so wks for me. Normal swelling for me starts early. Maybe even google the Brewers diet for preg women. I follow it and i still have some issues but they would be alot worse ((bedrest or pre labor for me)) if i wasnt on it.
