40 weeks divided by 4 is 10 months.....

but when people talk about pregnancy, they say 9 months....

So which is it? Im confused

I'm 31 weeks so how many months am i? Ok so 7 months..

So I only have 2 months left? or 3?

Wow this is confusing to me. Thank you all for being so nice about it :o)

Its a full 9 months, so it ends up being just at 10 months, if that makes sense so you go through 9 months, and if you go over a day your into 10 months.

Why do people put so much thought into this? Its seems like this exact question is posted at least once a month.

It depends on if you look at it by calendar months or lunar months. Honestly the only people who look at pregnancy in months instead of weeks is non pregnant people. OBs and midwives go by weeks not months. I've always tracked my pregnancy by weeks.

well, when they use the 40 week scale, the first 2 weeks of the pregnancy is before the egg is even fertilized, so, when you find out you are pregnant, you are already 4 weeks. so, you have 9 months after that, does that make more sense?

A year has 52 weeks (12 months).
You are pregnant for 40 weeks (9 months).
You are not pregnant for 12 weeks (3 months).

The average month has 4.3 weeks in it.
If you are pregnant for 40 weeks, that comes to 9.3 months.
Which is like nine months and maybe 10 days.
So don't count the first "pre-conception" days and you get nine months.
Definitely not 10 months!

The chart below shows how the weeks, months and trimesters break down into each other.

I used to get confused by this as well, but like another pp said...most months do not have only 4 weeks they have 4 weeks plus a few days...then you have the lunar months calendar. I generally just go by weeks if I am talking to other preggo mommas, my dr. etc. If I am talking to people in my family of whom it has been a while since giving birth or people in a store, etc. who ask how far along I am I usually give it in months. When I count the months I count by when I am due and assume the person I am talking to is basing it on 9 months and not 10....eg. I am due May 11, 2009, so if someone asks me how far along I am now (with today being the 28th) I would tell them about 5 1/2 months (6 months on Feb 11...and so on).
