well im 37 weeks preg. My doctor has diagnosed me with Pre-e. so im going in monday to have my cervix checked and to talk about our options. now with an epidural i have heard that you wont feel when your body is telling you to push and you will more than likely tear. is that true? and when they induce you i have heard that labor lasts so much longer is that also true? im just nervous and feel like i need to make a whole bunch of decisions soon so anything will help!
Quoting APlessy:
. now with an epidural i have heard that you wont feel when your body is telling you to push and you will more than likely tear. is that true? Yes, you are more likley to tear, your odds of failure to progress are also increased as well as ending up with a baby that cannot fit because you are pushing on your back your pelvis is decreased in size by 20%!
and when they induce you i have heard that labor lasts so much longer is that also true?
YES!! Not only is your labor longer and harder but your chance of needing an emergency c-section are increased by 50% because your baby cannot handle labors that long or hard. You would be putting him at risk!
I won't be much help. I was induced at 36 weeks for medical reasons. I know that is scary, but your doctors are right about getting induced to start labor. I didn't find the contractions that bad, I was actually handling them really well. I ended up getting an epi though to help progress my dilation. I did get a emergency c-section, I stopped dilating at 5 cm and my contractions were never constant I was like that all afternoon. I also started running a fever of 101. So I got the c-section due to the fear of an infection.
well i was induced at 38 weeks and with in 3 hours my daughter was out so for me it was really fast i got the epi with all three of my kids and i have felt when i needed to push i guess its different with everyone also about tearing i havent torn yet THANK GOD!!!!! but like i said everyone is differnent so you never no. everything will be alright.
k well here is my story take from it what you will since everyone's experience is different. i went to 41 weeks with my son and so i was induced. the pain wasn't that bad for the first 4 hours but i did have trouble dilating HOWEVER i must point out that my mother had to have me by c-section because she wouldn't dilate past 3 cm even though she went into labor naturally and labored for a looong time she wouldn't go past so they gave her a c-section. i didn't go past 9 the docs felt around and said that it was like a rubber band at nine it was barely there and they didnt want me to tear pushing so after 32 hours of labor i had a c-section. the epi wore off half way threw for me BUT i was in labor wayyyy longer than normal so that would be expected. i did have a c-section and i was scared to death in the beginning but they made me feel real calm everyone was great hubby sat right by my head and i heard the baby cry it was great and honestly wayyyyy easier than i thought it would be i was pretty sore though for about the first week but no 7 weeks later i am completely healed and fine with everything that happened....my baby came out 9 pounds and 7 ounces im glad i didnt have to push him out and it turns out i had two HUGE cysts that had hair and stuff in them that had to be taken out so they did it all at once. just try to relax and despite some of the horror stories you will hear just trust that these docs do this specific thing everyday for their entire career so they have seen your problem a thousand times over and have handled just as many times :)
well I had and epidural with my daughter and i did not tear no more than an inch.I wouldnt worry about it that much just explore your optiions and see what the doctor says as far as induction goes, but yes understand that you can tear with or without an epidural, it is okay to have an epidural.......![]()
Well I was induced with my 1st and went into labor naturally with my 2nd. My first labor, when i was induced, was 7 hours long, and my 2nd was 12 hours. And I had an epidural with both of them and could feel the need to push both times. In fact, with my 2nd, I almost could not keep myself from pushing bc the urge was so strong. So for me, the things you've heard were not true.
I've had an epi twice. The first time it did not work correctly. One side was numb the other not at all so they ended up giving me a double dosage. And no I could not feel a thing. And I did not tear and my son was 8lbs 2oz. I went into labor naturally and labor and deliver lasted 8 hours total .. 30 mins of it were pushing.
With my second son it worked properly and I could feel pressure but not pain...So I knew when to push and when to not. I did tear... 4th degree ( that is from one hole to the other) But he was 8 lbs 14 oz. I was induced with him at 40wks because of him having a kidney condition and he really needed to get out. My labor and delivery lasted 8 hours total and 1 hour of it was pushing.
I can also say that being induce was actually easier on my body. I did not have near the hard take your breath away contractions as I did when my water went to labor on its own. HTH

oh my goodness thank you guys soo much. i dont think i could have asked for better answers and i appreciate that no one bashed bc if i do need to be induced i dont have much of a choice..pre-e doesnt seem like a joke lol. but thank you guys, you have def helped put my mind at ease a little!
DON'T let other people scare you about induction.
It goes differently for everyone. I had pitocin with my last labor because it was going so slowly - it took me 12 hours to dilate 1 cm... after I got the pitocin, I had her 4 hours later. People on here will tell you that your chance of a c-section increases with an induction, sure, it does, but NOT by a huge margin. Your chance of a c-section increases MUCH more with an epidural than an induction.
Youre right about the epi, from what I've heard/read it doesnt always work right, it may only numb part of you it might not work the whole time, it might be too much and you cant feel to push, more likely to tear, etc. Not to mention people complain of back problems from their epi YEARS after giving birth - obviously not everyone but it can happen.
So, if you have an induction, sure it might hurt more, but skip the epi if youre not wanting a c-section.

My epidural sped my labor. I went from 5cm dialated to 10 in less then an hour after getting my epi. I did tear, but only had 2 stitches, and it really didn't bother me I loved my epidural, and I knew when to push.
