Ultra sound showed soft signs of Downs freaking out!!! I need support please. UPDATE!!!
So, yesterday we had the big 20wk u/s. To give you all the background I am 26 and my DH is 30. The baby wasn't cooperating with the u/s tech it took 5 different tries to get a good shot of the heart and the head was never still. But anyways, they said the back of the neck was thicker then they would like. She said the preference if for it to measure around 5-6mm and the avg measurement was 5.34. They also saw a bright spot in the heart. She said that the National ob people don't even agree on if that is a precursor for anything but she is required to mention it. She said that we weren't in a high risk category and we could do nothing, do the quad screen or the amino. I chose the amino( I know that many have a strong a opinion about amino but please not now ladies) They sent it out and I am so scared. She also said that u/s is not a great way to diagnose downs.
In my heart I feel like everything is okay, kinda the same sure feeling I had about the sex of the baby and I was right about that but part of me is saying that I am just hoping againsthope that all is well. Have any of you had this happen to a friend or maybe yourself and everything turn out okay?....
Please prey for my little man....Yeah...it's a boy. I want to be happy and excited but I feel like I am holding my breath.
****The doctor called today and the results are neg....Thank God....Thank you all for your support.*****
Turns out my cousin was perfectly FINE, and today she's in the Air Force Academy.
Just shows you that they are not always correct in what they diagnose.
hope everything works out!

I know everyone has an Idea in their head about how their baby is going to be and no one Hopes for their baby to have downs... but I don't think it's unfortunate. :]
I know alot of people with downs children, they are alot of work, but they also bring a different kind of light and joy into your life.
They still have alot to offer.
But I know what you mean. No one would hope that for their child.
The tech is right.....a u/s is not a good way to predict Downs at all. Not even a little. I've been on this site long enough to hear dozens of stories of women who were told that their babies would have Downs even based on the amnio, and their babies were perfectly normal. So even the tests with higher accuracy ratings can be wrong. But the neck thing is NOTHING to worry about yet anyway. I mean, it'd their job to warn you of ANY possibility, but it's no reason to freak out. A little thick? Man, lots of kids have really thick necks LOL. I wouldn't worry.
Did they draw blood too? When I went for my US with my son they saw an echogenic focus in his heart (that bright red spot in one of the 4 chambers). I freaked out, cried, I was hysterical. They told me the same thing. I went an had more bloodwork done the following day and a follow up US 4 weeks later. Turns out everything was fine, he was just measuring at a different amount of weeks that I was actually.
IMO, don't just go by that one US. Schedule a follow up, like a 2nd opinion or something. And request bloodwork before you opt for an amnio if you can. US are not 100% accurate especially if dates are off. GOOD LUCK to you. I am in my 2nd pregnancy and it's happened again. My follow up is on March 18th. I hope all is well then.
I'll pray for both our baby boys =)
I agree with you....except that really, I think that no one hopes that for themselves. And of course, I don't mean to imply that we are lesser people for hoping to have "normal" babies, but Down's Syndrome children require more special care than other children, and it can really test you as a person.....our world is not alwasy accepting of them and as parents, WE are the only who bear the brunt of that, but not the kids. Down's kids are some of the happeist, most joyful children there are. They embrace everything that life has to offer the, and give freely of themselves. They are wonderful teachers, in that respect, and I think that most parents of these children learn to feel quite blessed to have them. But they can know that whatever they hae to struggle with throughout their child's life, the CHILD will probably be a very, very happy person.

the neck thing happened to a coworker of mine and it turned out baby had cord on back of neck kind of draped like a boa. Everything turned out fine. Don't be to scared yet. Good luck and I will say a prayer for you and your little one on the way!

Same thing happened to me. I didn't have the thickened neck thing but my little on had the spot on the heart. I research everything. I looked it up and found a lot of information. The following link is by far the most helpful. The term for the spot on the heart is "ecogenic intra-cardiac focus" I hope you find the following encouraging and it helps you be more at peace. http://www.choroidplexuscyst.org/filly.html
