Another stolen baby name...

Backstory: My fiance's mother has always loved the name Gracie and wanted one of her grandchildren to have this name. Everyone in the family knows this, but never went for it. So as soon as we found out we were having a girl, we immediately came up with Grace Kyan. (Kyan was the middle name of my best friend who passed away last may.)

My fiance's sister has a daughter with her exboyfriend. Well, this exboyfriend recently passed away and his current girlfriend was about 7 months pregnant. (Don't feel bad, he was a deadbeat who sexually assulted his daughter, my fiance's neice.) Anyway, this girl gave birth to their daughter a few weeks ago and she ended up naming her Grace Tyan. So now my fiance's neice will have a cousin named Grace Kyan and a half sister named Grace Tyan.

So obviously, everyone in the family is kind of pissed off because this child isn't part of the family and this woman that they have met one time stole the name that we've had picked out from the begining. We're not even thinking of changing our child's name, because we love it and there was a reason that we picked it in the first place. How would you feel in this situation?

keep the name its gorgeous, and as of the lady that stold your name, all i can say is shame on her if she knew you wanted the name first.

I doubt it would bug me to much. If some one else names their kid a similar or same name as my kid I don't let it bug me. Did she know that you were planning on using that name, or does she just like the name too.

this is the reason why I didn't want  to share my child name with anyone because ppl steal your names, how rude

yes, she knew that we were using that name. I guess it wouldn't be such a big deal if it were anyone other than her. I mean, her boyfriend raped my fiance's niece, and she steals my name.

It would not bother me one bit.  A name is not legally "stolen" unless it has a copyright eye rolling

that's just aweful!
i would be very frustrated in a situation like that.
but i love the more unique names.
so there's no way that anyone's going to have the same name as my baby,

=)

I'd be irritated...like another mom said, no it's not "legally" stolen, but it's the point...I wouldn't care if it was someone I was never going to see, but if it was someone that was part of my family that I'd have to see it would irritate the crap out of me, that's why I never list off my fav baby names to people when I'm expecting so that way it doesn't happen.

I am sorry that happened to you. That is the reason I am not telling anyone what we are naming our little girl. I think you should keep the name.

Hope you are enjoying everything life brings you.

I am trying to follow the relation here...that child is in no way related to you or your family right???  So really it doesn't matter.  Right??  Or am I really confused.
