easter eggs

Ever peel a dyed Easter egg and see all the color that's penetrated the shell? Ick. I don't want my kid ingesting those chemicals and artificial colors. Even when egg dye kits are labeled "non-toxic," they usually contain coal tar and petroleum products. No, thanks.

we tried this last year and you have to leave the eggs for a while to be bright. but they turned out really cool!!

Interesting idea.  I may try it this year.

I normally dilute dye pastes that are for used for frosting cakes.  The dye is food-grade so I'm not really concerned about "toxins."

I might try this, but not this year. We usually just use plastic eggs and put goodies inside, like coins, m&m's or other small things.

I don't dye eggs...we just don't like them.  My kids always just enjoyed hunting the plastic eggs with a surprise inside.

It took me forever to find the "recipe" I used last year but I finally retrieved it.

Quote:

• For extra-rich dye colors, use food coloring
paste (available at craft and cake decorating stores).
Dissolve a dab of paste in a cup of hot water mixed
with 1/4 cup cider vinegar.

I used a mini whisk to dissove the dye and even then a little bit remained solid on the bottom.  Oh, and it will stain your hands!  But you get great color saturation.
