Bad habit or just not ready yet?

Dd is 4 and can't hold a crayon correctly yet.  When I put it in her hand, she holds it sort of right, but it looks very funny and not at all comfortable.  Should I lay off for awhile b/c she is getting frustrated, or will letting her continue with the fist grip just ingrain the habit more deeply so that she will never learn?  Please help, I really need to help dd with this and I'm not sure how.  I've been trying for 3 years now, and it's not getting any easier.

WOW  you have been trying for 3 yrs??  A child usually doesnt have the dexterity to hold a crayon like we hold them untila bout age 3 or up until age 6.  DD is 4 and i am not pushing the issue with her quite yet.   Is she able to draw circles and lines with the fist grip?   I would just lay off and let her come to this milestone on her own unless a dr or education specialist says other wise.

I would work on it for sure! That's not a good habit to let continue.

I'm not sure where you buy them, but I know they have grips that go on pencils that promote holding them correctly.

She can easily draw circles, lines, legs, arms, feet, and hands, faces.  She's very artistic.  She just can't hold the pencil right.  And thanks.

We used to have the triangular crayons, but I've lost them now.  They were through mail order.  Good idea.

My DD picked up a crayon and held it the "right" way from day 1.  Blew my mind, I don't even know if she was 18 months.  BUT, my son - well, he's 4.5 and is just know really starting to hold the pencils right.  I wouldn't push it.  If she's trying to draw and write more, in time it will become normal for her.  And besides, who says you HAVE to hold a pen the same as everyone else??? Maybe she's just got her own style?
