Average reading age for a child

My 4 1/2 year old is entering his second year of pre-school. He knows his ABC's and can indentify a few words, but does not know how to read yet. I find it difficult to read a book to him because he has no interest in books what-so-ever. I am concerned he will not read at the proper age.

Does your child know how to read? And if so, at what age? What do you think is the average reading age?

Do kindergarteners know how to read?

My 3 1/2 year old is starting to read books like Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See and Buzz Said the Bee, but he LOVES books and I've been working with him since he was 2 1/2 on the alphabet and all that....
