How do I know if my child has a sinus infection?

My son has had a cold for 12 days.  Nothing really bad.  No horrible coughs.  Just stuffy nose and some drainage.  And I think it is getting better.

I had to call the doctor tonight because his eye is pink - so I'm assuming pink eye.  And he had some small yellow gunk in the corner of his eye.  Not too much, just a small amount.

So anyway, I'm describing the symptoms to the doctor and she asks if he has a cold - I say yes.  And she said how long has he had it, I said 12 days. So then she says, well he might have a sinus infection.

The only thing that I notice that he is doing is that he is always sniffing up snot up his nose.  And he has been doing that for the past 12 days.  And tonight and another night he complained of a headache before we went to bed.

So how do I know if he has a sinus infection?

Those sound like symptoms of a sinus infection to me. Stuffy nose, goopy eyes. How is he sleeping? Is he rubbing his ears?

Along with what you mentioned, my boys will cough at night and a lot of times the coughing keeps them up.
