Transitioning to Big Boy Bed

I'm going to be moving my 2 year old to a big boy (toddler) bed here soon. I had tried for a few days to transition him slowly, seeing if he'll sleep in it for naps...but that's not working. What does everyone suggest for this? Just go for it all the way, take the crib down, and fight it? He gets up, plays, runs around... is this just something he will get used to? Any tips? Thanks

My daughter loves her crib. I asked her doctor about it and he said that she can sleep in her crib until she graduates high school lol As long as she's not climbing out or causing danger to herself he said it was fine.

Hey mama,

I was able to move my son at 15 months (he was crawling out and it just wasn't safe anymore). So, here's what I did and it turned out mighty successful (at least for us).

Before we moved his bed to the toddler bed, I allowed him to go pick out "big boy" bed lenins.  I took him to Target and he could pick out any lenins he wanted :).  He went for the cars (not Cars the movie).  It was simple enough :).  So, we went home and put them on his new bed.

Now, the toddler bed does allow him to get up a lot.  So, we made a new rule....he could get up at night, BUT he can;t bother us (unless its URGENT) or make a ton of noise.  We gave him a flashlight that you wind up (to scare monsters away) and he's allowed to read books and play quiet games.  Also, on non-school nights, he's allowed to have his game systems (iPad adn DS).

That's really worked for us :) :).

Well, we did it! This last weekend, we took down my baby's crib and he's officially in his big boy bed! First night went great, better than I expected! He got up a few times, I sat outside his room and just kept telling him to go to bed, and after about 25 min he was asleep like a big boy! So proud. Woke up once a little scared,  then fell back asleep till 650, and played in his room quietly till 725 then came in and saw me. Nap the next day was about the same, daddy was home with him, laid him down, got up once or twice, picked a few books to bring to bed with him, dadday went in and took all but one and said you can read one book then you need to go to sleep. And he did! Yay! Thought that would be a much harder transition!

Hey,

He will get used to it, and I'd suspect all LO's do this at first.  Its like having this freedom they didn't have before....so I would just let a few nights of free reign to get the novelty out of it..

But with mys on, we did something modified.  We told him he d idn't have to stay in his bed, but if he got out he cannot come out of his room (unless it is an emergency of course, needing to go potty, etc).  But he could get out of bed to play with QUIET toys like books, etc.

Worked really well for him and he's still good about beds now at 4 :) :)

My DD had a rough patch for a little bit when I got her her big girl bed, but she was fine after a few days. I would say just take down the crib and let him be in the big boy bed if he's already been taking naps in it.
