Cavities?!?!

My 4 year old has 2 cavities and he is getting them done tomorrow. Now I know he isn't going to be corporative so they sent me to a pediatric dentist. I'm afraid how they are going to do it. Did your little ones have to get cavities and how did it go? How did they do it? The reason I'm getting it done is because they said that it could affect his adult teeth growing in.

Any advice would be great!

I talked to someone in the same situation. Her dentist gave the child nitrous oxide; is this an option for you/are you OK with that? Can you bribe your son with a treat afterward? Will the dentist let you stay with him during the fillings? Would your son understand why he is having the fillings done? Maybe he would cooperate a little better if he understood and received a treat afterward?

Hey mama!

My son is 4 and he too has cavities :/.  My son has very deep pitted molars so food gets caught in them and you cannot for the life of you get it out.  It caused him to have 5 pre-cavities!!!!!

He did the cleaning really well :).  Just ask around for the best pediatric dentist that there is, and really be patient.  Its going to be a long appointment :).

My son did EXTREMELY well.  I love my Ped. Dentist, she's absolutely fantastic with Caden.  SHe told him that we had to scare teh crickets in his mouth away with the tools.  And that she was painting his teeth with teh blue and pink dies (the sealants).  He did AMAZING!  Just be patient and talk about how good your kid is the whole time :) :).

Good luck :) :)

I do plan on giving him a treat I'm not sure the nitrous oxide cause they just got a new pediatric dentist in the office (took me like 4 or 5 months to get this appointment) he would understand its just he isn't a big fan of people looking in his mouth to begin with for a little he Errol be fine but after awhile he gets scared and anxious

Our dentist gasses them and if they still aren't cooperative she reschedules and gives you a script for something to calm them.
We love this dentist, my poor son had to go thru a few crap dentists before we found this one. One dentist actually gassed him and then strapped his hands and legs to the chair. My dh had taken him and didn't realize he could say NO when the dentist said no patents allowed tithe back.
We reported that crap dentist and never went back.
Make sure if you are uncomfortable to remember you can always say NO and find a different dentist.

DS had 2 cavities filled a year and a half ago when he was 4 for the same reason. They didn't use any anesthetic because the nerves on baby teeth are tiny and DS's cavities hadn't reached them. His only complaint was that he couldn't see the tv at one point.

Does he have sunglasses that are just for the dentist's office? If not, find out if the pediatric dentist he's seeing has some or if you should bring your own. Try to give him as little detail as possible. Emphasize that the dentist will be cleaning the cavities, and avoid using the word "drill". The dentist is used to explaining the procedure to kids in a non-scary way, and will let your son know what's going on at each point.

Good luck!

my son has only had quick cleanings. I'm sure he wouldn't sit there to get cavities filled. good luck.
