Feet turn in at 16 months old, trips and falls, loses balance easily... should I worry??

My daughter is 16 months old, healthy (born about 3 weeks early but not a premature birthweight, no deficiencies or delays). She started walking between 11-12 months. When she walks we've noticed that her feet turn insignificantly and she sort of "wobbles" from side to side. Only recently have we considered this to be of any concern. She does not always walk in a straight line, her feet turn inward and sometimes step on top of one another. She also trips and falls, loses her balance easily. My biggest worry is that this is a development problem. It was recommended that I have my daughter see an "early intervention specialist" who can determine if there is a problem or if she needs PT which I plan to do. Can anyone relate to this situation and/or have a child who has a similar "condition" as my daughter? Is this common? Could she grow out of this? I would be grateful for any suggestions, similar experiences to share, words of support/encouragement :) Thank you.

I would talk to her pedi. There are several things that could cause this.

My dd has one foot that curves a bit it makes her look like she is pigeon toed

My little cousin had issues with his hip and legs which he out grew. I also have a nephew who had problems with his feet, they still turn in, but the doc said he should outgrow the problem.he was a late walker but is doing fine with that now

My ds is "pigeon toed". He falls a lot too. He's 3 and the doc said he'll grow out of it.

I haven't had this experience, but I would definitely get it checked out--just for your own peace of mind.

Do make sure that she doesn't sit with her legs back (like a "w")--does that make sense? My kids both tend to do that and we have to remind them to sit "criss-cross applesauce." It can cause their legs to turn in. Apparently, I had that issue as a child, so maybe it's a genetic thing.

I would definitely talk to the dr about the feet turning inward.

As far as her balance and wobbliness (is that even a word?) goes, I say its normal.  My dd is almost 18 mos, and she falls CONSTANTLY still.  She walks around like a drunken sailor most of the time!  lol

Great advice so far thank you everyone (I already feel better:) esp the "criss cross applesauce" - I'd like to watch her closely when she sits in my lap, never paid too much attention but it's true that could tell me a lot.... and ohhh yes, the drunken sailor, lol, that's my girl for you!

Hey,

My son doesn't have anything like that, but my younger one has Torticollis....which is a condition where his neck muscles are tight, thus causing mishapen head, spine which could lead to delays.

Just go to the PT :).  Its super easy and actually rather fun.  My son loves going to his PT, and it really helps.

My dd is 7. We just found out she walks on the insides of her feet. One day she started complaining about her feet hurting her bad so we took her to the dr and the dr noticed it. We have never noticed it. She had to have inserts made for her shoes to help her walk correctly. Ever since then she has only complained about her feet hurting her once...she has had the inserts about 6 weeks now. So my suggestion is to take her to the dr and have the dr look at her while she walks.
