5 yr old bed wetting and alarm clock ideas?
My son is about to turn 5 years old in August and is also about to start full day kindergarten in August as well AND he still wets the bed. I've tried a reward system, even bought him Spider-Man sheets that he can't have until he gets a full week of stickers on his calendar for not wetting the bed. This is a failure because it's been a month and he still can't do it. He just can't understand that he needs to get up and go. Is this a medical condition or just a lazy child? My next plan is to get him an alarm clock to wake him so he knows that's when he needs to go potty and with full day school starting soon also get him going to get dresses in the mornings. I've seen some on Amazon that change colors and so forth. I need one that will make an alarm sound, change colors and have an easy off button that he can understand - plus have a mommy setting of some sort that he can't change the alarm time, or at least not easily.
So i have two questions: 1- what can i do to stop the bed wetting?, 2- what alarm clock would you recommend we use?
HELP! Thanks!!
I agree. He is just not physically ready It seemed like forever that my DD (she did it between 4-4.5yo) would be wet and then over the course of a month she started waking up dry more often. I would try again when he is dry 75% of the time.

Lots of k kids wear pull up all the wa through k year. My suggestion is have hime wear pull ups. Lay off a bit. Have him come to you when he is dry.

we have the pull-ups but was thinking he was using them as an excuse TO wet the bed. when he wore them he would wet the bed (pull-up) more often. He's excellent throughout the day. He knows he needs to go potty and he goes. It's just at night we have our battles. We even make sure to limit his drinks before bed and make sure he goes to the bathroom before bed.
You can buy a potty training watch NO liguid a hour before bed make him potty before bed and add consequences for not going potty like having to clean up after himself. My kids school required that child is fully potty trained unless special needs

You can take him to the doctor to rule out medical problems.

It's not really fair to offer him spiderman sheets for staying dry at night because he CANNOT help it. He's not lazy. SOME kids just take longer to stay dry at night. In order to stay dry at night, he has to make a certain amount of a hormone that tells your body to slow down the urine production. He does not have control. You can try an alarm but it's not going to make him make that hormone any faster. My advice is to give him the spiderman sheets, buy him some pull ups and just wait for him to begin to have more dry nights than wet nights. It will happen in time.
I'm going to give him the sheets for his birthday regardless, but was thinking motivation to reach a goal might make him understand. He has his yearly coming up too so i can discuss to them my concerns about it. we have the pull-ups already but he loves his underwear... we did buy some puppy training pads (cheaper than the goodnight ones they made) to put under him and it's help with the laundry and he can see that he's had an accident.
They also just make hospital bed pads (like the puppy ones - but probably even cheaper still, if you by generic).
If he won't wear the pull ups, buy a rubber sheet to put under his regular sheet. This will save the mattress. Believe me, I ruined a mattress before I knew about rubber sheets. LOL

Motivational rewards only work for things a child has control over. This is not something he has control over. If his body has not yet matured, there's nothing he can do about it. Once he's developed the needed hormone which slows urine production when he's asleep, THEN you can limit fluids before bed and use motivational rewards to finish the nighttime potty training process.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has a great book called "Waking Up Dry," which explains the various causes of bedwetting and what you can do about it (if anything). It also gives statistics on how many chidlren at which age still wet the bed. You'd be surprised to see how many 5yr olds still wet the bed. Some chidlren's bodies don't mature until puberty or later. Your son is still young.
