Advice Needed: LOs 1 year check up blood work -high lead, low iron
Help me plz and say hell be ok and I can fix this. My sons first year was more then perfect and he's never been sick, I don't want to start now. Also, he screamed bloody murder for the blood work before they even pricked him, so it wasn't the pain I know, because last time he was perfectly calm . But last time there was also one lady doing it and she hit his vein the first time. This time it was someone being trained and she missed his vein four times. Plus the reason he started cryin to begin with is because there wad 4 women in the room surrounding him and holding him down, so I'm really dreadding more blood work though I know theres no other choice. Thanks for your time, plz get back to me asap so I can calm myself for the next few days while waitin for our appointment.
I'm sorry, I just don't know anything about lead in the blood. I hope you get some answers soon. Here's a bump.
Wow mama I have no idea. I would just make an appointment like your doctor said and see what they have to say from there. And I would definately get your house tested for lead and take steps to either fix it or move to a newer house!
Hey mama,
The best I can tell you is you probably should replace your flooring then. And you should probably have your paint tested as well. I think you can ask someone to come in from the state and test your home for lead. ALso, make sure you are very picky about the toys he's playing iwth as well! Make sure they are a brand you recognize and you can search online to be sure they haven't been recalled for lead contamination.
As far as the iron, perhaps you should give him iron supplements. They make polyvisol which is a droplet type vitamin that you can drop into his jiuce or watever he drinks :). That should give him a leg up on his iron. My infant is low on iron as well, so we started doing that so hpefully that helps.
And sorry you have had such a tough time getting the sample! That's happened to me before :/. I just know there's a lady that works at the Quest Diagnostics down the road that does a fantastic job with Leo. He's 9 months old and we take him there, we lay him down and I hold his body still while she has someone come in to hold his arm. They've done a fantastic job with him. Definitely not a "trainee" on the job, not for a baby this small!
First thing calm down....I KNOW your scared but you need to be able to think clearly.
Make the appt ASAP and here what the Dr has to say. Write down the actual levels so you can research and remeber the numbers .
Make an action plan from there.
Iron low is one of the easiest things to correct and just is kinda a wake up call to be more diligent in what you feed your child. You don't need liquid supplements IF you change how he eats. Heck Total Rasin Bran is an EXCELLECT source .
Foods Natrurally Rich in Iron
Lean red meats - beef, pork and lamb.
Liver - good luck getting your kids to eat this one.
Seafood including shrimp (my son's favorite), salmon and tuna.
Poultry such as chicken and turkey.
Eggs. The yolks contain iron.
Kidney beans, lima beans, black beans, pinto beans, soy beans and lentils.
Dark green vegetables including spinach, collard greens and mustard greens.
Broccoli, asparagus, Swiss chard and brussel sprouts.
Tofu.
Nuts.
Dried fruits such as raisins, dates, apricots and prunes.
Be aware that the iron found in non-hemoglobin based sources, such as dried fruits and vegetables, is more difficult for the body to absorb than the iron found in meat sources.
Kid Friendly Foods that are Enriched with Iron
While the above list is a great source for naturally-occurring iron rich foods, not too many children jump for joy at the prospect of eating a plateful of liver and lima beans. So here are some foods that are artificially enriched with iron, that your children and toddlers may find a bit more palatable.
Many cereals are enriched with iron. Iron fortified cereals may also contain large amounts of sugar so be sure to check the label. To turn ordinary cereals into iron rich foods, most manufactures mix tiny iron filings in with the cereal. For a fun experiment, you can finely crush the cereal and use a magnet to identify the iron shavings.
Many pastas and breads are iron fortified as well. Check the labels to see the percentage of daily allowance found in these foods. Also remember that many of the daily allowance figures are for adults.
My DD4 tested high for lead at her physical in April. They sent her to the lab to have her blood drawn and it came back fine. They said the elevated levels could have been caused by a piece of dust landing in the tube, etc.
There are many things you can do to decrease her lead levels. Unfortunately, they aren't all an easy one time fix. She probably going to need multiple follow ups. Take this seriously because although it's not affecting her now, it will later on if not addressed.
WOW. I'm sure you're a nervous wreck. I know that a lot of old floors have asbestos in them. MIL's did and they had a new floor laid on top of it when I was pregnant. It's very expensive to have the abestos floor torn out.
