My 18 month old LOVES to color. She knows what to do, well, scribble mostly, but she knows what crayons are for. But, she also LOVES to eat the crayons!! Oh it drives me insane. She starts out good, without putting them in her mouth, but then its like the second I look away, or I don't pay attention, she sticks them in her mouth and bites off the tips, and if I haven't noticed that, then she'll just try to eat the whole thing. I swear, she's going to poop out a crayon one of these days! I've tried different crayons, I've stayed with her the whole time she colors, and what not, but she wont stop. Is it just a phase? I know alot of kids do it, but she's been doing it for a while now. Im not going to just not let her color, but I'm tired of throwing crayons away, and buying new ones!!

my daughter used to eat playdough, it must be a texture thing or something, Every time she would go to eat the playdough i would say "playdough is for playing not for eating!" and if she still tried i would take the playdough away from her and she wasn't able to play with the playdough again until the next day. She would throw a fit, but she eventually stopped! good luck!

Its the age mama.  They are still learning a lot of things iwth htier moths and some children don't get over this phase until they are coser to 2....nothing bad though.

You may want to see if they have crayons that are inside plastic encasings.  I know that crayola has markers that are large balls just for this reason :)

They are nlot going to hurt him. But if you explain to him about eating the crayons and he understands maybe he needs to have them taken away for a little bit til he will follow your directions

I wonder if you could put some of that anti nail biting polish on the crayons.

Don't give her any attention for it. She's doing it to get a rise out of you!

Sit with her while she colors and the second she puts one in her mouth say, "uh-oh! We don't put crayons on our mouth. Now we're all done." (be sure to say it in an empathetic tone - not angry or upset or this won't work.)

Then calmly put the crayons up and away then walk away so she's left without anything. If she cries for the crayons, ignore her and go on about your business. Do not address it - no lectures or talks or bribes or anything. No attention for that behavior.

there are warnings on labels of most toys that say.. not for children under 3, choking hazard...

why?  Because children under 3 tend to put a lot of things in there mouths..

including crayons. lol..

it's normal.

This

Quoting 2and2onway:

When she does it take them away and tell her not to eat them. Every time. Eventually she will stop. It is a phase.

Well, I never had this problem with crayons before. My son did try to eat a piece of play-doh once though. I started freaking out going OMG No don't do that what are you doing?!?! It freaked him out and he started to cry. He stopped playing with play-doh for a while and never really got too interested in it afterwards....I don't recommend doing that.

Could be a textile fascination.  Maybe give her a lollipop to suck on while she colors so that she doesn't do the mouth thing with the crayons.
