cross his legs and hope to poop

My son is 4.5 and has been potty trained for nearly 2 years. Within the last 6-9 months he has developed what seems to be a constipation issue. He will go an entire week without pooping but many times a day I find him standing in the corner holding up his shirt and crossing his legs in pain. If he finally does go it is about 10 times in one day all in his underwear. When I try to get him on the potty regularly he acts as if sitting on the toilet is scary, I believe it's because the constipation causes any bowel movement to be painful. We have tried all the at home remedies and repeat visits to his pediatrician with his only advice being laxatives. The problem still persists and his doctor is of no help. I understand this is a common problem especially with boys but my question is,

When do I take him to a specialist?

There is a pediatric gastroenterologist about 2 hours from where I live and I'm wondering if I need a consultation. It is painful to watch my little man suffer and it only gets harder every day dealing with the issue to my best ability and not seeing any results. Thank you a head of time for any advice you can give!

My son has always had an issue pooping. He will go for days without going and then it is painful. I don't know if it would help since your son just started this and mine has always been this way but I buy fiber gummy vitamins. He takes them everyday. It helps keep him regular. But if I forget to get them and run out its back to the same thing. But it might be worth a shot.

I would try the fiber vitamins before going to a specialist. They always seem to work with my daughter. Good luck mama

If it were my kid I'd be going to the specialist since your peds only treatment is laxitives it is obviously beyond their capabilities as a dr and someone more specialized should be consulted.

Honestly, the pedi GI is going to first go over diet with you and talk about adding more fiber and probiotics can help too, then possible going to suggest a regimen of behavioral toilet therapy considering he has been potty trained for a bit now so they will have you schedule times all day long for him to sit on the toilet, mostly after meals, then they too will start suggesting laxatives or stool softeners. Honestly, it sounds like a typical witholding phase.

My da has a pooping issue as well~ he has been so constipated his x rays showed nothing but poop all the way up~ we did miralax for ever it seemed. I'd get Him going to the point he'd immediately poop after every meal so I backed off... The cycle continued until one day I rushed him to be dr he had been c/o awful stomach pains even when we d hit a bump in the car he'd cry out in pain. He wouldn't eat and was always nauseous I was thinkin appendicitis ~ had immediate CR SCAN and low and behold poor thing was so constipated they were worried the large amount of stool and it's size would stretch o rupture his colon. Off to and emergent pedi GI dr about and he away~ it was AWFUL. He had to have a rectal exam.... I cried he cried it was so devastating for my ds. He's 5 btw...imagine teaching good touch bad touch then this happening!! Omg pretty sure he was traumatized after that experience.

Anyways we have since started him on fiber gummy chews for ages 2-11 he actually like them an probiotics 2 x a day. He ASKS for his probiotics becuz he knows they help his belly. And water water water. The more liquids he takes in, the easier it is to poop. If the bowels don't have water or fluids, the poop can't move, it hardens and will get stuck in his colon. We were afraid we'd have to do surgery to remove it it was so large :/

U an buy children's probiotics OTC and fiber gummy chews r right next to it~ it's worked so far and we haven't had to go c a dr again ;)

Probiotics and stool softeners? Ds has really hard bowel movements. He doesn't go days without a bm but they seem difficult to pass and are HUGE.

I'm on my phone so my short answer is google "encopresis". My Pedi said my son had it. When I googled it the symptoms didn't fit what I knew was going with my son but sounds like what you are going thru. Good luck.

Yea a pedi GI will give u a prescription laxative that works wonders and then while that works u get better eating habits and more fluids. That's wat happened with ds1.
