Has YOUR 2 or 3 year old had a Barium ENEMA xray? Need info!

My son has been dealing with chronic constipation for about 2 years.

We went to see the specialist last week, and we are going back next monday for a barium enema xray.

We are going to a childrens hospital for this. He won't be sedated or put to sleep for the test ( I don't want him to be anyways). I don't really know anything about this test. I'm worried about this being done.

He fights and thrahses very hard if he is given an enema to just poop. So I'm scared about this proceedure being done, because the tube will be placed in his bottom, and his belly filled with barium, and a little balloon expanded to hold the barium in, and then the tube taped to his bottom so it doesn't come out. then they take xrays with all that in there.

Please if your 2 or 3 year has had this done, please tell me about it and how your child handled it. give me all the info, because I don't know what all to ask.

I don't have any advice/experience. Doesn't sound fun though. Hope all goes well and you get some answers though. :(

Yes my son did last year. He was 3.5 at the tiime. My son hates enemas too, and I hate giving them! It isn't too bad and if they are doing it at a children's hospital they should have a child life specialist come in to help and bring toys, a movie on a portable dvd player, to talk to the child and explain it better if you feel that woudl help. They help a lot. They put a catheter into my sons bum and taped it there and he was laying down for all of it. They hook the catheter up to barium and they put the barium in that way, my son actually didn't freak out as bad with the barium enema like he does his other ones. They turned him side to side to get different angles and I think to help the dye move so they could get a full picture. Then they tried to push on his tummy and get out what dye they could but he later passed teh rest out. The dye they used for my son was a clear one which I like much better than the white barium. We got to stay with our son and watch the whole thing, he actually enjoyed watching it. We had results in a couple days.
