At what age should parents chuck the baby monitor?

Mine is still on and he's 2. His room is a really long way from ours. I don't see it getting turned off for a few years to come at least.
We stopped using ours at about a year and a half or 2 years.
We did use it for naps in the summer when he was in the cabin and I was down by the water.
When they were/are old enough to safely get out of bed and come get us if they needed to, around 2.5.
I have a monitor in the hallway of the kids room. That way I can hear if my 2 year old cries in his room or my 6 year old wakes up in the middle fo the night since their rooms are on the other side of the house.
Aren't you afraid they'll walk out the damn door?
We got rid of ours when DD was 3, but now we have a house with stairs, and I'm thinking we need to get one again.
