18mo not walking??

My son is 18mo (Leland) and he doesn't walk. We can't even get him to try without massive tricking and even then he takes 1 step and sits. He'll cruise, crawl, everything fine, but he won't walk. Totally disinterested. We've tried baiting him, setting him up with a push toy, holding his hands... Nothing. Nada. He realizes what we're doing, screams, and sits, refusing to even try.

On top of that, he will only say dada, sometimes ba, ma, and a few other sounds, but honestly, his 18 mo birthday is in two days, I am completely freaking out, and can't sleep because of it.

He's small for his age, very lean, and I've noticed he has longish legs comparitively, but - GAH - I can't stop freaking out.

DH's Gma has a masters in child development and she says to get him to a specialist, which has only contributed to me freaking out.

Tips? Advice? Assurance so I don't have a meltdown?

ETA: He was very, very sick this week, lost weight and slept all the time... He doesn't want anything to do with it definitely now, we tried to take his hands and he immediately dropped and refused to stand. So of course, that doesn't help either but I am sure that he'll get back to letting us once he feels better and stronger from being sick.

Thank you all very much.

If it worries you so much, call his pediatrician and voice your concerns to him/her. :)

We should be in this week, bc of his vaccines, I was trying to let him have his time before I freaked, and his ped thought nothing of it everytime he's seen him.

Keep reminding myself that kindergarteners don't crawl to school.

i have a 2.5 yr old whos had similar issues. he didnt start walking on his own until he was a week or 2 shy of 19 months. he is seeing a speech therapist this coming week to evaluate his verbal skills. it can be rough i know. as far as walking goes i would think he would at least be walking with some assistance by now but remember every child is different. he might not be ready yet. if he wasnt at least crawling by now id be pretty concerned. i might not hurt to take him to a specialist for his walking. idk if they could do too much about the speech just yet but you never know. i hope everything goes well. if you ever need to talk you can always message me.

Thank you very much. He used to let us help him walk all the time, but slowly stopped letting us the more we tried (for longer, more often). He just freaks out. Now, he'll stand, play, lean his back against the wall or couch and play... So I think he can, maybe, but is too afraid, or just doesn't have the muscle strength...

it just sounds to me like hes not ready yet. and maybe he dosnt have the strength. but since he use to let you help him walk and can stand he just might not want too. but sounds to me like he will get there. just might take a little time. does he have any toys that he can hold on to and practice walking with??

That is a valid concern to have.  Contact your Pediatrician and then go from there.  Hope all works out.  Good luck!  Best wishes for your son.

NORMAL age for walking is 9-18 months so your just barely over.  My eldest son didn't walk until 2 and never had any problems.  Getting evaluated shouldn't scare you.  IF they determine he needs some help the sooner he gets it the better.
