the bottle

Well, my ds is 2 years old and he still drinks his milk from his bottle. he definitely does know how to drink from a cup and from a straw. BUt he still needs his bottle and I don't really stress teaching him to not drink from his bottle. I feel like its his "soothie". Some women have told me to get him off the bottle, but I just don't care. I feel like there isn't anything wrong that he still wants the bottle still. My question is, am I doing the wrong thing by not removing his bottle? And, do any of you have a toddler that does this?

my 2y 10m old just stopped using the bottle. He only used it once a day right before bed. He just decided about a week ago he doesnt want it anymore.

I don't know that I would say you are "wrong", its your kid, your choice.   I wouldn't let my 2 year old use a bottle but that's because I get sick of washing them long before the age of 2.

For me and my children it is wrong.
It is bad for their teeth. and to use it as a "soothie" would be promoting--for lack of better word--unhealthy relationship with food.
curiusity.....when do you think is a good age to take it away?

I understand where you are coming from. My daughter will be three in July and still uses a binky. However, a bottle is actually bad for teeth, when the baby suck milk it pools in the back of their mouths and coats the teeth making them more prone to cavities. Also the muscles needed for proper speech can be ignored with bottle drinking. I think that now would be a time to start shifting. Maybe cut it down from two to one then none. I know its hard and seems a little unfair to the baby but its a milestone that needs to be passed. Good luck on weaning. Oh and nuk has a sippy that is very similar to a bottle that you could use to transition.

The APA says by 18 months a child should be weaned from a bottle.

in our house we get rid of it by a year. when the shift out of formula they shift out of the bottle.
Jasmin was off the bottle by 9 mths. she got sick and had to have pedialyte and used a cup--soft nipple-like top--so when she could have a bottle I didnt give it to her we just used the cups since she had already went a while without one.
Brady was off before a year but he HAD to be a big boy like his 2 older sisters :)

My 2 year 7 month old was bottle broke a week ago yesterday. He only used it at bedtime, and finally I had enough, last Wednesday I took it. Even though he used the bottle to sleep his teeth are perfect.

My son is 19 mos and still takes a bottle all day. He prefers it to a cup. We are still nursing so he doesn't use it to sleep so I'm not concerned about it. I feel like eventually he will make the decision. I keep his bottles and cu ps in a low cabinet and he knows he can get one and ask me to fill it whenever. He just doesn't usually choose a cup... yet.

Nobody can tell you when or when not to take the bottle away. But the sooner the better
Good luck!!
