Potty Training Advice for a 3 yr old, please!

My three year old little boy isnt yet potty trained and we are having a difficult time to say the least. He knows when he has to go so we run to the toilet but with no results...he sits forever! We play games, read books, talk, watch a movie on the portable DVD player...nothing seems to work to get him to relax enough to GO!! Any advice would be helpful because I'm thinking he's just not quite ready

My son was 3 1/2.  The question is, what is he wearing all day?  If you want to give training an honest shot he has to be in underwear all day long while you are home (except for sleeping).  Let him pee on himself for a few days and see if that motivates him.  If he's not making progress after a week, he's still not quite ready.  My DD had to pee on herself for 4 straight days before making 1 drop in the potty but it was all downhill after that.

How long has he been three?  It tends to take boys a little longer to learn.  How about getting him a little stool and having him stand and pee like daddy does (totally assuming he's got a daddy in the picture, sorry), or play the "hit the cheerios" game?  For some boys (in my experience), sitting doesn't equal automatic release like it seems to with girls.  Maybe because of placement of the urethra?

My son is three and we've been working on potty training for awhile. One day he just said he needed to pee and went into the bathroom and got himself on to the potty and sat and went. Since then he has been going on his own with very few accidents. Follow his lead.

He's not ready. Back off and let him do it. When they're ready they go. Just follow his lead.

We started potty training at age 2. DS fully potty trained, just after we moved into our house and 1 month, be4 his 3rd Birthday. After we moved, we changed tactics..We started out by fully dressing him in day clothes, underwear and all, everyday, asked him every 15 minutes if he had to go, rewarded him with 2 M & M's when he went, never once limited his drinks, or made him sit for long on the potty, never used a kid potty, and found that standing just worked better for him. He had accidents alot, but we just stayed persistant. At night we used (big boy pants) He loved Cars, so we bought Disney Cars pullups, (didnt matter if they had a design that faded or a coolness when wet) it never bothered him either way. Even having accidents didnt. Eventually after persistence, he got a hang of the feeling to go, and started going on his own, night time accidents stopped on there own. He's 4 now, and has had 2 nighttime accidents and 1 day time accident since being potty trained. It'll come eventually, its not that hes lazy or that your not trying. Its like learning, with persistance, kids will learn, and each learns at a different pace. Praise, praise, praise.

I feel you, my son is 4 and I try but he won't go. Maybe I will just put him in big boy pants and see what happens.

Thanks everyone I will heed your advice! We do underwear...no pull-ups and diaper at night. I will consider everyone's expertize in this and go from there! Thanks for your responses!!

Maybe he is being TOO stimulated while on the potty.

If it were me, I'd back off and go back to pullups or diapers.  It sounds like he is not ready.  Why make yourself crazy if he is not showing any interest or is willing to go?

He may not be ready... If he stays home with you all day. You can try to naked method. I tried that with our daughter. And I tried just underwear. It worked with underwear. Good luck.
