Should I call the doctor, or is this just the "flu" still running its course? Update

Update: We took him to the ER.  Good news is that he looked pretty good.  They ran some tests and he does have the flu.....they mentioned that we may have 2 more days of the diarreah, but at least there's nothing really wrong going on.  He's starting to be a bit better about drinking too.  They said his throat was rather red and he probably wasn't drinking because of that.  They recommended ibprofen/tylenol to help with the throat pain and that seems to have made the difference.

He's still got loose stools (that smell awful) but at least he's acting better today.  He was fussy, but not nearly as bad as he was.

Thanks all!

Leo broke out into a 104+ fever Saturday night.  He's 15 months old, btw.  He does have some weight issues, so we do have to be careful about how much food he's eating a day.  We don't want him to lose too much weight.

So, Saturday he broke out in that fever and had a dry cough.  His brother also had these symptoms the week prior, so we figured it was the same "flu" and just treated the symptoms.  During this time he's been refusing to feed, even bottles.  He usually drinks about 5 bottles per day.  The last few days we are lucky if he drinks 1-2 :/.  The fever lasted 2-3 days and then went away.

Yesterday, he started having diarreah.  We took him to his feeding specialist appointment anyway, and she said it was related to the "flu" and said not to worry.  It was only that morning.

Last night he was very fussy, still refusing to eat (this makes 4 days of feeding refusal).  He had bad gas and we kept giving him the gas drops.  He would fuss fuss fuss, have a good fart and be happy for a while.  But then it would come back.  He's been going through this through today.  He didn't eat much yesterday, so there wasn't much else he could poop out.  But today he's got diarreah again along with the fussiness.

Do you think this is the same flu riding its course, or should we call the doctor?  I hate to bother them needlessly, but how much is too much?

I would probably call the doctor. He's losing a lot of electrolytes through the fever and the diarrhea, and if he's not eating, it's not being replaced. Babies get dehydrated very quickly. I'd call to be on the safe side. Good luck!!!

Thanks, this is what I'm thinking too, but I know if I made an appointment DH is going to get all fussy about "all the appointments" we have :/.  I didn't want to make one needlessly for no reason.

I'd rather err on the side of caution. Especially with a baby that young. Is he acting normally or does he seem more tired than usual? You can lightly pinch the skin on the back of his hand to see if it stays pinched. Or when he cries, does he have tears? Those are signs of dehydration.

Agreed.  If I'm ever in doubt about whether it's something more than just a cold/flu/stomach bug - I call.  I'm sure the doctor's office recognizes my number now :) - but I've learned that when my gut tells me something's up, it usually is.

I would say, if you feel there is something more going on it doesn't hurt to call. after all, that is what they are there for :) Hope he starts feeling better soon.

I'd go to the ER, sounds like he could be getting dehydrated and will need IV fluids.

Gas and diarrhea are probably both related to not having eaten much in the last few days.  Will he take water or pedialyte?
