have you looked up "encopresis"?  google it, i bet it fits your son perfectly.  our pedi said my son had it but he wasn't quite as bad as what i read.  the suggestion was to make him sit on the potty for 5-10 mins after EVERY meal to retrain his colon.  if he's struggled with chronic constipation his colon could be stretched out and not functioning properly.  have they ever had to do any manual extractions of feces for your son due to impaction?

believe it or not kids absolutely will hold it because it's a better alternative to the pain of pushing a large hard poop out, stretching and bleeding a bit.  at this point you want him pooping, period.  even if it's in a diaper, at least he's moving things out.

i would start with looking up encopresis though.  also, with the spring/summer you can give him tons of berries and fruits with natural fibers in them and try to cut back on his miralax.  my son has had issues with constipation too but never during summer!!!!

If you think something is wrong with him, then you need to take your child to a pediatric GI specialists. Don't let people make you feel bad for trying to do the right thing for your child. If you need a referral from your doc, just stand your ground, in a nice way with your current pedi and tell him that you just want to do some further testing to find out what's going on.

I would look into a GI specialist as well. I am sure you are both frustrated, but to him the fear of painful pooping is probably worse than not being pt.

using a laxative all the time will cause laxative dependency, miralax itself was targeted at causing some long term harm in children, so be careful there. My youngest son and my niece both have that issue, we stopped using the miralax ( that is what we were on too) and started using Karo syrup. it seems to help a lot better then the miralax and the karo helps to replace the intestine bacteria needed to function instead of strip it like the laxative. My son is down to needing the karo syrup once every 2 to 3 weeks and my niece once a week, she's had a bad case for years. Good luck and I hope your little guy gets fixed up soon
