Problems with my son at night

So I put my son down for bed at night and he has been getting up and wondering around the house. For example tonight he went downstairs and got an onion out of the fridge peeled it in his room, took the pumpkin carving kit in his room, and had my ipod unplugged from the charging port also in his room.

He is almost 5...

I have tried just about everything. We have a gate in the hallway and he knows how to open it or climb over it. He needs to be able to get to the bathroom that's why the gate is in the upstairs hallway. I keep his door open and my door open to try and hear him at night, but sometimes he is just too quiet...

I just need advice on what to do.

Get a better gate. I agree with the bells - maybe close his door halfway then put bells on it so you wake up then & can redirect him.

He may be sleep walking - so it may be something that you have to work around. I would be afraid of him walking out the door. Get a latch for inside your door.

i've heard of door alarms. then it would wake you up when he tried to get out?
