9 Natural Ways to Stop Coughing in Kids

Jodi Meltzer

A nagging cough can keep kids up all night long. And if they're up, you're up. It's always an ugly scene. No one does well sacrificing sleep.

So, what are the alternatives to sleepless nights when your child has a cough? You can flee to a hotel, of course, but you will not win any mom of the year honors going that route. And you will probably hear your kid screaming "MOMMMMMMYYYYY" across town anyway.

"A cough can be a little thing that becomes a big deal," said Carol Wilkinson, MD, PhD, a pediatrician at UCSF and Medical Director of Kinsights. "Coughing can not only be irritating, but it can keep a child from getting a restful night’s sleep just when it’s most needed."

Check out the nine natural remedies to help quiet a child's cough so you your child can catch some zzzzzzzzzs!

What natural remedies do you use to curb your kid's cough?

I read an article awhile ago about milk causing an increase in mucus with kids. I started cutting back on DS's milk intake and noticed a huge difference. We made up for it with other healthier foods.

I'll have to try a few of these.

Very interesting. My husband swears by honey in tea.

Honey lemon tea helped us. And a teaspoon of honey is a good thing.

I use Zarbee's. We've used it as early as we could (2+ months old). It's all natural and super effective. The baby one uses agave nectar, and the one for older kids has dark honey. My husband came down with a sinus infection, and we ran out of cold medicine in the house, so I told him to try it, and it worked! The doctor asked him what he was taking, and they said to keep taking it, so it works for kids and adults.

Honey is actually a natural cough suppressant and is anti-bacterial.
