Kids Flying Alone

Has anyone let their kids fly alone.  My 12 year old is going to be doing it for the first time this summer in August. She has flown with us but never by herself. My sister in-law has been bugging me for years to send her by her to visit, and I finally said yes.  I am so nervous and scared!!  The airline has told me they will have some one with her the whole time, but I am still uneasy about it. Would love to hear some stories about other parents who have gone through this!!

My brother and I flew by ourselves when I was 5 and he was 7.  (long story).  We were never alone and had a flight attendant assigned just to us.  She made sure we got our seats, checked on us all the time, took me to the bathroom,  and escorted us off the plane and to my grandmother.  That was 23 years ago so I am sure they made tons of improvements and arrangements for solo kids.  She will be fine!  With all the new security, I am not sure if you can go to the gate with her but I would ask about it.

My two nieces flew last year to help out one of my SIL's (MN to NC) during a huge break her daycare provider took. The girls were 11 and 13. They did have each other... but the whole flight there and back again went very well. Just as the above poster stated about her trip with her brother, the flight attendants were very helpful with getting the girls on and off the plane. The woman that booked the flight ended up getting the girls in first class on the way there... something about her knowing my SIL's fear about sending her girls that far alone.

I did when I was 10, 11, 13 and 15. I think up to 15 years old some airlines do a unattended minors thing where they were a badge around their neck (i did) thats red and says UM on it. a steward-est will hold her ticket and check on her thru ought the flight. I thought it was great all four times I flew. If there are layovers they also escort you to the next gate and stay with you while you wait. Or if shell be stopping at the atl airport you get to ride a golf cart thru the airport which was really cool lol. if its a long layover theres a special room where theres chips and soda and stuff.

I HAVEN'T SENT ANY OF MINE YET BUT I WAS 7 WHEN I FLEW BY MYSELF AND IT WAS MY 1ST PLANE RIDE.
I FLEW FROM ANAHIEM, CAL. TO HOUSTON, TX. I WAS SOOO EXCITED THE NIGHT BEFORE THE TRIP I NEVER SLEPT AND THE TRIP ITSELF WAS AWSOME. I GOT TO EAT PEANUTS AND DRINK COKE, AND SEE SOME REALLY PRETTY SCENERY.

JUST DONT LET HER KNOW ABOUT THE THINGS THAT COULD HAPPEN OR SHE IS OLD ENOUGH THAT SHE WILL BE WORRIED THE WHOLE TIME. JUST TELL HER WHAT TO DO WHEN HER EARS POP AND HOW TO CONDUCT HERSELF ON THE PLANE AND SHE SHOULD BE FINE. WHEN I WENT I DIDNT HAVE ANYONE SIT WITH ME I WAS BY MYSELF, SO I AM GREATFUL TO HEAR THEY SIT SOMEONE WITH THEM NOW. OF COURSE THAT WAS 20 YRS AGO. HEHE
IT WILL ALL WORK OUT FINE. JUST MAKE SURE YOUR SISTER KNOWS TO CALL YOU AS SOON AS THE FLIGHT LANDS.

My son flys back and forth to see his dad by himself. He just turned 8. He loves it. We use Southwest Airlines. They are th best with kids flying alone. They have someone walk out and get them and then they stay with them on the flight. They have to walk him off the plane and check the person ID that is picking him up. When I pick him I have to show my ID and the flight attendant has to sign some papers and so do I. He love to fly alone. There is always someone that will sit by him and talk to him during the flight. The flight is only an hour long so it doesnt bother him that much. It is a little scary the first time for you and them. I cried like a baby the first time he flew alone. I stayed until after the plane was gone. It will be fine. She is old enough to do this. The airlines are very good about taking care of the ones that fly alone. I hope this makes you feel a little better about letting her do this.
