I am the mother of two beautiful. kids.  They are 4 and 8.  Both are hard of hearing.  They are amazing and are very normal considering their disability.  In fact, we don't even think of it as a disability.  To us it is life as usual with some struggles along the way.  Both of my kids are very smart and I am so proud of them for not seeing themselves as different.  My oldest sometimes says he wishes God had made him able to hear like other kids and I tell him that God made him just they way he is and he is pretty great.  They both are!

Thanks for the input. I do tell them this and sometimes we sit together and point out others disabilities. It makes them feel better. However, sometimes they find people that we can't actually see their disability or we don't know what it is and then they can't quite understand. My daughter has not had the moment yet where she gets mad about her hearing. My son has, but as he gets older he seems to understand better that he just needs to adjust things and he can deal with it.

As your kids get older let them know that every person on the planet is born with a "disability". Someone will never learn to cook, another will never see in color, some of us read backwards, some of us have bad attitudes that will never change. God gave each of us a "disability" and many of us have more than one;)
