I'm Kate, and this is my story:

Glossy magazines often tell us that black is the color to wear, but try wearing it to your own husband's funeral and see how you feel then. Widowhood is neither fashionable nor glamorous. Every woman dreams of marrying the perfect man, but losing him is something for which none of us is ever prepared.

Thirteen years ago I lost the love of my life. We had been married for 10 years. He was my husband, lover, friend, confidante, running partner, and so much more. He was 42 years old, he was healthy, and in an instant he was gone.

Thirteen years ago I gave birth to a baby . Chloe was prematurely jolted into this world at 25 weeks and only 16 ounces. Eighteen minutes later she died; her lungs were too underdeveloped for her to survive. Chloe was born and died in the same hospital emergency room that my husband had died in 4 days earlier. I had no hospital stay - I left the hospital and immediately attended my husband's funeral with my 5-year-old son Jonathon.
